Authorities on Wednesday said a 17-year-old had been charged with homicide after two people were killed and another seriously wounded by gunfire during overnight protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake Jr.
The burst of violence came as this city has been rocked by days of tension since police shot Blake on Sunday, which set off sometimes damaging protests here and reverberated across the country. In Kenosha, the shooting came amid the arrival of self-declared militia and counter-protestors on the city’s streets.
Police in Antioch, Ill., about 20 miles west of Kenosha, said that they had arrested 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, describing him as a suspect in the incident. They said Rittenhouse, an Antioch resident, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in Wisconsin, but did not specify whether he was being charged in one fatal shooting or both.
A complaint filed by the Antioch police in Lake County, Ill., described him as a fugitive, saying that Rittenhouse had been charged with homicide in Wisconsin and fled “with the intent to avoid prosecution for that offense.” According to minutes from a hearing on Wednesday, he was held without bond and a hearing Friday will deal with his potential extradition back to Wisconsin.
Shots were fired around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said. After the first shots, a young White man carrying a rifle began running north on Sheridan Road, away from a crowd of protesters.
Video shows the armed man fall to the ground and then fire multiple rounds into the crowd. Two more people fell to the ground, one shot in the arm and the other in the chest, the Journal Sentinel reported. Another graphic video shows a man with blood running down the back of his neck and bystanders shouting that he had been shot in the head.
A Washington Post video journalist, Whitney Leaming, said that after gunfire erupted about a block away, the man with the rifle ran past her with a few protesters in pursuit. He tripped and fell, then rolled into a sitting position, raised his gun and opened fire at his pursuers, she said.
Here is a video of what happened immediately after those shots were fired.
The kid does not look concerned at all that he just killed two people, in fact, he seems totally confident that the color of his skin will keep him from being shot on sight by the police, and he is correct as three armored police vehicles drive right past him as if seeing a heavily armed white teenager were the most normal thing in the world.
I am not yet sure what this boy’s story is, but it is clear that he went to the area of this protest brandishing a long rife, which makes any self-defense claim seem unwieldy at best.
I did not think we had enough information to label this kid a white supremacist yet, but then I read this courtesy of Raw Story:
“Kyle Howard Rittenhouse’s social media presence is filled with him posing with weapons, posting ‘Blue Lives Matter,’ and supporting Trump for president,” reported Ellie Hall, Amber Jamieson, and Tasneem Nashrulla. “Footage from the Des Moines, Iowa, rally on Jan. 30 shows Rittenhouse feet away from the president, in the front row, to the left of the podium. He posted a TikTok video from the event.”
Trump rallies are essentially white supremacist gatherings, so yes I think we now have enough.
