Virginia governor’s racist med school photo should signal the end of his political career.

Oh yeah, that’s bad.

Courtesy of NYT:

Virginia’s governor acknowledged on Friday that he was photographed more than 30 years ago in a costume that was “clearly racist and offensive” — admitting that he had dressed either as a member of the Ku Klux Klan or in blackface — but resisted a flood of calls for his resignation from national and state Democrats.

“I am deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now,” Ralph Northam, the Democratic governor, said in a statement on Friday evening.

In a subsequent video, Mr. Northam said he was “ready to do the hard work of regaining your trust” and was committed to staying in office “through the remainder of my term.”

Mr. Northam issued his statement hours after the photograph — which was included on his 1984 yearbook page from Eastern Virginia Medical School and appeared alongside other pictures of himself — became public. Neither person in the black-and-white photograph was identified, and Mr. Northam, a pediatric neurologist, did not confirm which costume he had worn.

He faced intense pressure on Friday night to step down, as Democrats moved swiftly to send a zero-tolerance message to a governor whose 2017 election marked the party’s most significant victory since losing the White House.

As you might imagine a number of the Democrats running in 2020 have come out forcefully calling for Northam’s resignation, but then they kind of have to at this point or else be accused of hypocrisy.

Keep in mind that Northam was in med school and therefore certainly not a teenager, though I think we should also expect better of teenagers in the ’80s as well.

I read that there were some Democrats defending Northam online, but I certainly have not seen any.

In my Twitter feed, there is universal agreement that he should step down, and I agree with that.

It should also be noted that a number of Trump supporters have suddenly found themselves suddenly appalled at racism, and have weighed in as well.

But fuck those assholes.

Update: Northam is now claiming that he is not either of the people in that photo.

He is giving a press conference right now.

Update 2: Here you go.

So what do we think? Believable?

  3. Beaglemom February 2, 2019 at 11:13 am

I think he should resign also. And he should have made those photos known to the VA Democratic Party leaders when he first entered politics. I doubt very much if he has no memory of being in those photos. They are shameful.

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 5:44 am

Bullshit on you, Beaglemom, with no handsan in sight. Do YOU remember every costume you ever wore from high school into young adulthood. Do you think he even knew they existed? While this incident has made me trace back memories of costumes a) I’m certain I am forgetting a few b) quite a few were made with “stuff at hand” because I was broke or in a small town remote area pre-Walmart – with zinc oxide and tempera paints contributing to some really questionable choices. Does it mean I was racist/sexist/etc? Nope, just poor and trying to join in some fun. Guilty of indulging in “costume accuracy, nothing more, nothing less.

That presser was cringeworthy and enough with the long suffering wife at his side
How TF do you never know what is on your yearbook page? That you never saw it. Bullshit. I didn’t buy a college yearbook either, but I sure know how I was depicted in it.
This is horrible for the democrats.
Resign or off yourself, but you can’t be gov anymore. Sorry to be callous, but that presser was unworthy of any elected official in the US and if he isn’t strong enough to do the correct thing, then the worl dmay be better off without him.

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 5:51 am

What’s cringeworthy is you Anon @11:31 – too lazy or too chickenshit to register a name? But, pretty self-centered and narcissistic aren’t you. I don’t know if a college yearbook exists from the years I spent there. I have no clue if there were pics taken (same for a couple of HS years too.) The ones I have, I know there are tons of errors, including a whole page of photos that have the completely wrong names to the pics. So get a fucking grip people, this is a distraction. Remember that Kavacreep sits on the SCOTUS, Ronnie Jackson is going to sit in the White House as a medical advisor, and some asshole who thinks global warming is good, but totes not caused by humans ’cause GAWD regulates the weather, and CO2 will me make plants will grow faster. DISTRACTION! Kindly remove your outraged heads from your arses.

  5. Anonymous February 2, 2019 at 11:36 am

He had to hand in those photos to the yearbook staff.

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 5:55 am

You are what is pathetic. Because you were what? on the yearbook committee at his med school? You know exactly the procedure used to put together that year’s yearbook? And year book editors and printers NEVER MAKE MISTAKES. Yep, you are pathetic.

  6. Wp February 2, 2019 at 2:05 pm

To summarize Northam: I’m not the person with blackface in the yearbook photo. I’m just associated with people who dressed in blackface and a KKK robe and also I’ve used shoe polish on my face in *another previously undisclosed incident* where I did wear blackface.

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 6:06 am

In college? What’s pathetic is that you think college party association determine your mindset and lifepath – so, so sad you are wp. College is 4 years of your life. There are people I “associated with” in college whose names I can barely remember. Bet you go back and stalk the campus on game day in a desperate attempt to relive your “glory years.”

  7. NOtMe February 2, 2019 at 2:26 pm

The Times also reports that Northam is considering using facial recognition software to prove that it’s not him in the photograph.

  8. Goose~Coonman February 2, 2019 at 3:10 pm

The night Ralph Northam won the VA gubernatorial election, Senator Kamala Harris sent out this tweet, saying his election showed “that Virginia won’t stand for hatred and bigotry”

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 6:10 am

And that is STILL the case, because the photo ii 40 year old, silly Goose-??? “Coonman” – who’s the racist here jackass?

  9. caroline jumper, now back in Mobile February 2, 2019 at 4:11 pm

It’s young adults’ jobs to try to be outrageous, politically incorrect in costumes. We don’t have regular monsters by that age, so we imitated things that did scare or upset us.

One year we threw a party for a few hundred people. I was the recently departed pope, complete with grey face and blue lips, and my housemates were Father Dracula, Sister Zombie, and Lucifer. Jesus showed up. Hitler left with Bo Peep. A Mennonite grad student showed up in Blackface. The tackiness, the bad taste, was the point.

Would I do that now? Well yes I would, but I bet the Mennonite theological student wouldn’t.

What is outside the bounds of tackiness has changed. For the better.

I’d cut the Gov a break. Once.

    • anonymous February 2, 2019 at 6:28 pm

I think I was taught by a Sister Zombie. I know for sure I beat out the competition with my Aunt Jemima costume.

I agree with your post 110%.

      • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 6:12 am

        Me, too!

    • Kristie February 3, 2019 at 2:28 am

I agree with you. Virginia was (and still is, once you get outside the tiny slice that is Northern Virginia) a hugely racist place. In 1984, things were different–the movies were all about degrading women and minorities, and turn on the tv and you almost never saw a non-white person…if you did, they were the enemy or the side-kick. The question to ask is, “Is he like this NOW?”

I suspect this is another rightwing attempt to divide and conquer the left, and the left (as usual) is walking right into it with their outrage set at full-bore.

      • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 6:15 am

Yeah, Kristie. Those of us who feel this way need to remember to let out Congresscritters know we support Northam. I am still pissed at the railroading of Franken and Garrison Keillor, not to mention the Aziz Ansari.

To the rest of you (including Gryphen) on the lynch Northam bandwagon, better get some ER for that foot wound there.

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 6:03 am

Thank you for the voice of reason, Caroline. Exactly – what has he done since.

Yes, the comparisons with Kavacreep are inevitable, but let’s look at what both have done since. Kavacreeps raison d’etre has remained attacking women, but in a much more dangerous and sophisticated way (anti-choice.) Northam has defended women and I haven’t seen him supporting any racist policies – have you? If anything his platform has been equality and anti-discriminatory. Single instances in youth should only be problems if they show the basis of a pattern and continuing mindset.

  10. Anon February 2, 2019 at 5:14 pm

I think this guy was set up and the photo is a fake attempt. Smells like rumputin

    • anonymous February 2, 2019 at 6:38 pm

My initial reaction was similar to yours. An easy way to get rid of a Democrat before the elections.

  11. anon February 2, 2019 at 5:36 pm

“If they find that terrible picture before the election, he wins by 20 points!”

Hey, everybody, how’s it going tonight? Recently, I heard this great line from a comedian. He said, “If you want people to forget that you were jerking off, just make a joke about kids getting shot.” And I thought, “Jokes about kids getting shot? I can do that!”You heard the one about the kid that walks into the school on Valentine’s Day? Skinny kid, wearing headphones, gets dropped by his dad. And he says, “I love you,” and gets out of the car and walks into the school. And then gets shot to death a couple of hours later. [Rimshot]
You guys ever heard dead baby jokes? I got a dead baby. His name was Joaquin Oliver. He was going to be eighteen. But now he’s dead. And that’s not a joke.

Drug and Opioid-Involved Overdose Deaths — United States, 2013–2017
    Weekly / January 4, 2019
From 2016 to 2017, the prescription opioid-involved death rate decreased 13.2% among males aged 15–24 years but increased 10.5% among persons aged ≥65 years (Table 1). These death rates remained stable from 2016 to 2017 across all racial groups and urbanization levels and in most states, although five states (Maine, Maryland, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington) experienced significant decreases, and one (Illinois) had a significant increase. The largest relative changes included a 29.7% increase in Illinois and a 39.2% decrease in Maine. The highest prescription opioid-involved death rates in 2017 were in West Virginia (17.2 per 100,000), Maryland (11.5), and Utah (10.8).

Heroin-involved overdose> the largest relative increase (21.8%) was in Virginia. The highest heroin-involved overdose death rates in 2017 were in DC (18.0 per 100,000), West Virginia (14.9), and Connecticut (12.4).

Deaths involving synthetic opioids propelled increases from 2016 to 2017 across all demographic categories (Table 2). The highest death rate was in males aged 25–44 years (27.0 per 100,000), and the largest relative increases occurred among blacks (60.7%) and American Indian/Alaska Natives (58.5%). Deaths increased across all urbanization levels from 2016 to 2017. Twenty-three states and DC experienced significant increases in synthetic opioid-involved overdose death rates, including eight states west of the Mississippi River. The largest relative rate increase occurred in Arizona (122.2%), followed by North Carolina (112.9%) and Oregon (90.9%). The highest synthetic opioid-involved overdose death rates in 2017 were in West Virginia (37.4 per 100,000), Ohio (32.4), and New Hampshire (30.4).

Ever heard of FAKE News? Contrived photoshopped photos. It’s been done before.

  17. Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 5:39 am

Here ya go Gryphen, registered Democrat ABSOLUTELY defending Northam online. 1980s, Virginia? College/university/grad school. Party, Costume party – yep, some people didn’t think dressing in blackface or as it may have been called, full costume makeup and accuracy, was bad. In many cases, their audience was STILL all white (and that’s the bigger problem we should be appalled at) rather than this distraction from a guy whose past school career is non-racist, pro woman stellar. SO take this resign crap and shove it. These days the only Democrat able to run is going to be Jesus Christ, because no human is perfect, especially in their youth. This is a real waste of talent:

    Al Franken
    Bill Clinton
    Hillary Clinton
    and now:

  18. Whiplasherman February 3, 2019 at 12:03 pm

I entered the same med school this guy went to in 1988. I can assure you the yearbook policy is that the graduating student gets to choose and hand in the photos he/she wants on their half-page spread. Also they get to choose what the little quote on the page is.
That being said, there were a couple of nimnos who would put outrageous pictures elsewhere in the yearbook, or put captions on pics that were in poor taste. So I suppose it’s possible someone slipped a prank picture in, but given that was YOUR page, your legacy so to speak, he would raised hell if he didn’t approve of it.
Nevertheless, I’m for forgiving him, particularly since he expressed remorse. Hell, if Kavanaugh had just come out and said “you know, i drank a lot in high school and did some stupid ass stuff that I regret. I don’t remember Christine, but it’s possible that incident happened and I’m deeply sorry for what happened and the trauma she suffered.” I would have let that pass too. (Of course, if he still had his little tantrum, one would think that any sane person would realize that is NOT judicial tempermentand kicked him to the curb)

    • Whatevs February 3, 2019 at 2:33 pm

One also needs to look at what his professional life has been since then.

In Kavacreep’s case, misogynistic rulings and statements that show his as seeing women as less than full, equal to men human beings? Check – then that incident was just the start of deeper attitudes that haven’t changed and for which he should be castigated TODAY.

In Northam’s case look at his record – is there something there that shows he legislated without considering the effect on minorities or didn’t support legislation that would help minorities? I haven’t seen it. SO this was a young adult action in bad taste. Find one person that is lily pure. Show me one person who over 30-40 years hasn’t reconsidered their political opinions.
