Now it’s real.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday that America needs to move toward a “vote by mail” system to give citizens a safe way to elect their lawmakers while the coronavirus makes it dangerous to congregate.

“In terms of the elections, I think we’ll probably be moving to vote by mail,” Pelosi said in an interview on MSNBC. “That’s why we wanted to have more resources in this third bill that just was signed by the president, to get those resources to the states to facilitate the reality of life: that we are going to have to have more vote by mail.”

Her position is in direct conflict with that of President Donald Trump who on Monday warned that voting by mail would hurt the Republican Party.

Yes, it will, which is exactly why Pelosi should waste no time in getting this bill written up.

I know the Republicans are going to fight like hell, but at this point there really is no workable alternative.

Waiting this thing out in the hopes that everything will go back to normal before November is the same kind of thinking that allowed us to get caught with our pants down by this pandemic.

In other words that’s how Republicans think.

But Democrats know that we are in this for the long haul and we need to get moving on it right now.

We just did vote by mail for the Democratic primaries up here in Alaska and it went smooth as silk.

No reason the same cannot happen nationallly.

And the fact that it might prevent Republicans from winning elections, well I guess that is the cost of progress.
