The Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., to answer questions about his claim to have just limited knowledge of an ultimately aborted plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, Russia, NBC News reported Wednesday.
Trump Jr. testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2017 that “I was peripherally aware” of an effort to build that project in Russia, which was being pursued as his father was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. That effort was not known to the public at the time.
But President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen in February told a House committee that he had met with both Donald Trump Jr. and his sister, Ivanka Trump, “approximately 10” times to brief them about the Trump Tower plan.
This is big news because it marks the first time that any of the Trump family members have been issued a subpoena, and also because it is coming from a Republican-led committee which means that Trump cannot characterize it as a partisan attack.
It will be interesting to watch and see if Trump demands that Junor ignore this subpoena and prepare to fight it in court.
Currently, Trump is refusing to cooperate with any of the Democratically-led House committees, so it will be interesting to see if that defiance extends to the Senate Republicans as well.
Trump could actually find himself at war with both the House Democrats as well as the Senate Republicans at the same time.
More popcorn anyone?
