Maria Butina — the Russian secret agent convicted of gathering intelligence on the National Rifle Association and other US groups — has been begging for cash on social media to help pay for her legal costs.
The gun rights activist posted a video on Instagram Saturday, explaining how the money would be used to help fund an appeal. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has reportedly said that the Russian government would not pay for her legal costs.
“We aren’t financing a lawyer, but we are doing everything so that [Butina] will be afforded all rights as a Russian citizen,” Zakharova said Sunday on state TV.
I find it interesting that the Russian government is not paying Butina’s legal fees.
Is that because she cooperated with prosecutors for a plea deal?
Still, it is kind of interesting that she made her plea in Russian when she apparently speaks English quite well.
And according to journalist Natasha Bertrand Butina has not been entirely abandoned by the Kremlin.
The video was published on Instagram by Alexandr Ionov, the leader of a pro-Kremlin nationalist organization that provides a forum for separatist movements in the US & abroad, and enjoys funding from the Kremlin. https://t.co/qceZaOGPKZ https://t.co/ZUR89ZoXMj

So Butina got a plea deal but is still asking for help with her legal fees because the Kremlin will not pay them.
Yet they will host the video she made asking for the donations in Russian.
I have to admit I am a little confused here.
You would think there would be an oligarch or two who would pay her fees, or perhaps Trump will pony up.
After all, she tried so very hard to help him get elected.
