Republicans are trying to distract from the Mueller report by launching investigation into top Obama Administration officials.

Oh yeah, this should work.

Courtesy of The Hill:

Republicans are setting their sights on top Obama-era officials as they plan their own probe into the 2016 election.

Eager to move on from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and the Trump campaign, GOP senators are gearing up to investigate the investigators. The idea is gaining traction with the Republican caucus, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.).

Mueller’s report hasn’t been released yet, but Republicans have seized on a four-page letter from Attorney General William Barr that summarized key conclusions of the two-year probe, including that Mueller “did not establish” that President Trump or members of his campaign coordinated or colluded with Moscow in its election interference.

“Republicans believe that the FBI and [Department of Justice] — the top people — took the law in their own hands because they wanted [Hillary] Clinton to win and Trump to lose,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said during an interview with Fox News’s Neil Cavuto as part of a media blitz discussing his plans for an investigation.

He said that he will be looking at “abuse” of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant application process and the counterintelligence operation into Trump’s campaign, adding that “there will be a lot of inquiry as to how this all happened.”

Individuals to be targetted include James Comey, former CIA director John Brennan, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and of course former FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.

Essentially this investigation will be along the lines of other GOP driven investigations like Benghazi, Fast and Furious, or Hillary’s emails.

They won’t find anything because there is nothing to find but it will serve their base plenty of red meat to feed on.

If they can drag this out until November 2020 the Republicans can use it to motivate the wingnuts to come out and vote for Trump now that its clear he is not going to be impeached.

“And they’re investigations into Democrats, television shows that have been mean to me, and Puerto Rico. That’s right, I want my paper towels back Amigos.” “And Trump exclaimed, “Russia, if you’re watching, go to bed. Daddy has won!””

“Federal prosecutors now contend with jury pools full of Republicans who think the FBI is corrupt.”

“I’ve met a lot of FBI agents. I met dozens and dozens if not hundreds of FBI agents. I don’t know if any of them were Democrats. I know for sure none of them were liberal,” Purdon said. “The idea that the FBI is some bastion of left-wing influence, to anybody who’s worked in the federal criminal justice system, is laughable.”

Republicans on the Hill this week weren’t thinking much about the long-term consequences of the president’s campaign against the FBI and DOJ.”
““I hope not,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) told HuffPost when asked if he was worried the Justice Department has sustained permanent damage. “I really worry about the FBI and the Department of Justice, but my concerns go back to the Loretta Lynch, James Comey term of office.”
“And although Trump is crowing about Barr’s conclusion that Mueller’s team didn’t find a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, he’s ignored another key component of Barr’s summary: that Russia interfered in the presidential election.”

She has traded the No. 1 slot with Fox’s leading conspiratorialist Sean Hannity, the flip side of her cabal-spotting coin.
(In the days since the Mueller investigation concluded, Maddow’s ratings have dipped significantly while Hannity’s have risen.)

Bitch McConnell is also walking back the rules on confirming judges. I’m sure when the Democrats are set to take over the majority in the Senate, he’ll seek to put them all back, including the traditional blue slips that he is ignoring. And if they Democrats dare to act just as the Republicans are, there will be screaming for resignations and foul play, just as they are demanding that Adam Schiff resign.

Schiff is basically telling them to fuck off. Good for him. More Democrats need to ignore or counter-attack the GOP. Use their playbook against them.
