I hear this a lot so I thought it needed to be addressed.
Courtesy of CNN:
As states scramble to push back their primaries to comply with the federal guidelines aimed at social distancing to combat the coronavirus, whispers have begun that maybe, just maybe, President Donald Trump will use the pandemic to cancel the 2020 election entirely.
This is flatly untrue. Here’s why.
A general election is not up to the states. It is governed by federal statute. And this language in particular:
“The Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in November, in every even numbered year, is established as the day for the election, in each of the States and Territories of the United States, of Representatives and Delegates to the Congress commencing on the 3d day of January next thereafter.”
The President of the United States doesn’t have the ability to change federal law created by Congress. Not by executive order. Not in any way. Only Congress can change federal law. And if you think Congress, where Democrats control the House, is going to cancel (or even change) the date of the election, well, that is not going to happen.
That includes during a national emergency or even in the extreme situation in which Trump proclaims martial law.
Now this was written by Chris Cillizza who is not one of my go to reporters, so I thought I would double check his facts.
So I went to Snopes.
Snopes categorized it as a mixture meaning there were some parts that were accurate and others that were not.
Here is exactly what they wrote:
The date of a U.S. presidential election could theoretically be postponed with the approval of Congress and the president.
However, such a postponement would be extremely difficult to achieve in time for the 2020 presidential election and would not provide much temporal leeway for voters.
The key part to me, which I feel puts this in the false category, is that Trump would need the cooperation of Congress which is now run by a Democratic majority.
Simply put there is no fucking way that Nancy Pelosi is going to allow Trump to stay in power one minute longer than she absolutely has to.
Therefore this is essentially a non-issue.
Putting that aside the American people are crying out for intelligent leadership, and they know that the Trump Administration simply cannot provide that.
If we did not allow elections to move forward in order to put a more competent government in place there would be an uprising.
