Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley told conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Friday that the Confederate flag represented “service, sacrifice and heritage” for people in her state before mass murderer Dylann Roof “hijacked” its meaning.
Roof murdered nine African American churchgoers during an evening Bible study in Charleston, S.C., in 2015. He was an avowed white supremacist who posed for photos with the Confederate flag.
A week after the massacre, Haley, then the governor, announced her support for removing the Confederate banner from statehouse grounds.
I am not sure if Nikki Haley slept through history class or if South Carolina history classes just gloss over the part about the Civil War being fought so that white people could continue to own black people that they treated like livestock and slaughtered like sheep if they got too uppity?
The Confederate flag represents a hell of a lot more than just nine deaths, it represents the deaths of thousands. 620,000 0f whom died in the Civil War itself.
Haley did a good thing by supporting the removal of the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds, but she is destroying that legacy by demonstrating her ignorance of history.
