Nancy Pelosi does not want to see Donald Trump impeached. She wants to see him in prison.

Can’t we have both?

Courtesy of Politico:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats that she’d like to see President Donald Trump “in prison” as she clashed with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler in a meeting on Tuesday night over whether to launch impeachment proceedings.

Pelosi met with Nadler (D-N.Y.) and several other top Democrats who are aggressively pursuing investigations against the president, according to multiple sources. Nadler and other committee leaders have been embroiled in a behind-the-scenes turf battle for weeks over ownership of the Democrats’ sprawling investigation into Trump.

Nadler pressed Pelosi to allow his committee to launch an impeachment inquiry against Trump — the second such request he’s made in recent weeks only to be rebuffed by the California Democrat and other senior leaders. Pelosi stood firm, reiterating that she isn’t open to the idea of impeaching Trump at this time.

“I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,” Pelosi said, according to multiple Democratic sources familiar with the meeting. Instead of impeachment, Pelosi still prefers to see Trump defeated at the ballot box and then prosecuted for his alleged crimes, according to the sources.

Look I am with Pelosi on this one, I also want to see Trump behind bars.

And opening impeachment proceedings will help to reach that eventuality.

The impeachment hearings will provide piles of evidence that the DOJ can use to imprison Trump, as well as bringing that information to the public.

Pelosi is also concerned that impeachment does not have the support of a majority of Americans, but she seems to forget that a majority of Americans did not support the impeachment of President Nixon either until television coverage of the hearings brought his many crimes into their homes.

I hate Trump. I agree with Pelosi. Vote the asshole out of office, then start criminal proceedings. We will get rid of Pence that way, too. Do we really want a president Pence in the interim? The senate isn’t going to vote to impeach anyways. Also, Trump loves a boogie man and fight. Refuse to play his games and vote him and Pence OUT!

The Democrats need to build a case for impeachment first. Public sentiment can be swayed with congressional hearings but right now about 50% of Americans still aren’t for impeachment. Most people haven’t read the Mueller report and have gotten incomplete information from the media and a corrupt Attorney General.

Despite the fact that Trump & the DOJ have directed people to ignore subpoenas, what have the House Committees done to compel them to testify? Fines? Court orders?

The other important area that should be part of any future hearings are Trump’s financials – get that information and get it out there. Mueller didn’t touch the Trump Organization’s dealings.

Getting the public informed of the numerous instances of Trump’s obstruction contained in the Mueller report, plus the Trump Mafia’s shady dealings past & present, would benefit the House Democrats to then spearhead impeachment hearings.

The Democrats need a “Master Plan” against Trump. I hope Pelosi is coordinating this with her caucus because right now it seems unstructured.

I think the important point is that impeachment hearings will open up all the information that is being withheld from Congress and the American people that can be used to prosecute him.

Does anyone honestly think a jury would unanimously vote to convict? Impeachment may be unpopular, but it only requires a majority.

I just read an article by Jennifer Rubin in the Washington Post, titled, ” Forget Impeachment. Tee up Prosecution.”, which details a multi-step process for the House Democrats to take in order to address Trump’s obstruction. It is a unique strategy and I hope they follow Rubin’s suggestions, along with more ideas by Laurence Tribe, who is a Constitutional Scholar.

    Here’s the Rubin article:

I think they should continue their investigations and not call them impeachment hearings, basically gather the info which will lead to impeachment. however Nancy is correct that the senate will never convict him, he gets off and begins his revenge. I don’t want the Democrats to get boxed in by this talk of impeachment, especially when we KNOW turtlehead McConnell will NEVER give the go ahead to even hold hearings.

SEAN HANNITY (HOST): Speaker Pelosi now apparently telling senior Democrats that she’d like to see Trump behind bars.

Based on no actual crimes, she wants a political opponent locked up in prison?

That happens in banana republics — beyond despicable behavior. And by the way, they would literally turn, in many ways, the USA into a country we no longer recognize.

According to Raskin, Trump and his advisers “figure that if we get into 2020, it’ll be too late to launch an inquiry.”

One of the things House Democrats have been fighting Attorney General William Barr over is their request for an unredacted version of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s final report for the Russia investigation.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi is endangering the efforts of Democrats to win back control of the United States Senate, Professor Jason Johnson explained on Thursday.

Johnson criticized Pelosi for refusing to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump “Essentially what you have Nancy Pelosi saying is we have a monster here, And you can use holy water and garlic but don’t use the silver bullet even if we have it in the chamber, literally, the House chamber,” Johnson said.

“It doesn’t make sense and it makes her leadership sound weak. I’m down here. I saw a speech by Maxine Waters,” he continued. “Nancy Pelosi is speaking against her own base and speaking against her own leadership at this point, there is no strategy at this point, certainly not one that people are agreeing with.”

Johnson said that forcing senators to vote on Trump’s impeachment could help Democrats win back the chamber in 2020.

“And putting them on the line and Republicans have to say, during, right before an election year, this is why I want to keep a president who is engaging in possibly illegal activities in office. That’s the greatest campaign slogan you can have,” he argued. “And she is denying that to this country.””
