Donald Trump has praised Greg Gianforte, the Congress member from Montana, for violently attacking a Guardian reporter, saying that someone who performs a body slam is “my guy”.

Trump described in glowing terms the physical assault that occurred on 24 May 2017 when Ben Jacobs, the Guardian’s political correspondent, was asking Gianforte a question about health care policy in the course of a special congressional election in Bozeman, Montana. The US president incited cheers and chants from a crowd of about 8,000 supporters on Thursday night when he said: “Greg is smart. And by the way, never wrestle him. You understand. Never.”

As the cheers rang out across an aircraft hangar in Missoula, Trump went on to say: “Any guy that can do a body slam … he’s my guy.” After praising Gianforte, Trump acted out the motion of throwing a person violently to the ground.

Here is the president of the United States celebrating violence against reporters literally on the same day that he had to admit that an American journalist had been murdered by the Saudis.

Talk about bad optics.

It should be pointed out that Gianforte had to plead guilty to assault and was forced to do 40 hours of community service.

So Trump is literally congratulating a lawbreaker for his use of violence.

“Trump is open about his disdain for law. In April, he told an audience in Michigan that “our laws are so corrupt and stupid.” Trump is also clear about why he is breaking these laws.”
Steve Bannon explained a broader administration strategy for dispensing with facts. “The real opposition is the media,” he has said. “And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.” Yale professor Timothy Snyder, in his groundbreaking book The Road to Unfreedom, explains in detail how leaders like Vladimir Putin and Trump undermine factuality by flooding the zone in this way. Putin dominates Russia by propagating grand lies that take the entire society off balance. Trump’s final aim isn’t simply to escape accountability for his crimes. The final aim is to replace democracy itself with a form of autocracy, under which he and his cronies are forever unaccountable for criminal actions.”

“Then he went to Montana and laughed about how Gianforte tried to beat a guy up for asking him whether he supported protections for pre-existing conditions.”

“Donald Trump wants to create this boogeyman, this tension, this [belief] that ‘if we don’t get out, then they’re going to get us,’” she said. “Who’s the ‘they?’ Today it’s Honduras, tomorrow it’s Hillary [Clinton], the next day it’ll be those who oppose [Brett] Kavanaugh.”

“He is really good at creating this invisible monster that’s coming to get his base,”

“Tony Perkins sent out a hate email-In a “prayer of the day” email, he asked his supporters to pray to “God for the right to harm LGBT children, and elect far-right Republicans.”
“We must resist politicians who advocate for adults and/or children to be prohibited from seeking psychological and spiritual help when they suffer from unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion,” “Such are combatants on the front lines of the culture of death.”

Adding, “We must support true advocates of the family who will boldly oppose every initiative across America that fosters sexual revolution, undermines God’s laws pertaining to marriage, and undermines parents’ authority to guide and educate their children according to their faith.”

“God, as we draw near Election Day, please guide all Americans, but especially your people, to vote for men and women who will lead our cities, counties, states, and nation in a way that is pleasing to you and that will bring blessing to Your people, our nation, and all the nations,”

“May we be found worthy for you to raise up godly men and women who will honor you in public office, and to prevent those who will disregard you and your laws from gaining power in any level of government,””

“father was simply having “fun” “He wasn’t the guy that body-slammed anybody,” the younger Trump said of his dad. “He can have fun. By the way, this is exactly why my father won.”

Jacobs told Cooper he felt “shock and dismay” when he heard Trump laud Gianforte during a Missoula rally Thursday night.

“I always knew that was a possibility,” the reporter said, “but then there’s the process of how do you deal with it and then how you actually call up and tell your family that the president is mocking you when you’ve been a victim of a crime.” “That’s not the action of a ‘tough cookie,’” “That’s the action of a coward.”
