Joe Biden called out President Trump as an “existential threat” to the United States in a campaign appearance in Iowa Tuesday. The bashing by the front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and former vice president came as he and Mr. Trump travel throughout Iowa Tuesday trying to galvanize their supporters.
Biden labeled Mr. Trump an existential threat to decency, America’s standing in the world, and democracy.
Biden drew a “sharp contrast” between himself and the president on several key issues, among them tariffs, climate change and restoring American “values.”
Beyond policy and international relations, Biden made an emotional appeal about Mr. Trump’s behavior, such as his recent name-calling of Bette Midler on Twitter during his visit to Europe for the D-Day 75th anniversary celebrations. He also referred to Mr. Trump as a threat to democracy.
“Four years of Donald Trump would be an aberration in American history. Eight years will fundamentally change who we are as a nation,” Biden said.
Biden has made a number of gaffes, and he is likely the wrong candidate for the Democratic party this time around, but there is still power in a former VP calling a sitting president an existential threat to the country.
That is not mere political hyperbole, Biden knows better than most how much damage Trump has done to a nation that he and President Obama dragged back from the abyss.
The Obama Administration worked their asses off to rescue us from financial ruin and get things back in order, and Trump comes in and starts smashing the china on day one.
That must be incredibly hard for the former VP to watch happen.
In many ways, it would almost seem poetic for Biden to ride in on his white horse and rescue the country from the shambles that Trump has made of it since taking the reins of power from his former boss.
But this is not a movie, and he is not the hero we are looking for.
