Joe Biden abandons support for the Hyde Amendment in response to pressure from other 2020 Democratic candidates.

Biden is slowly realizing that the ground has shifted under his feet.

Courtesy of CNN:

Former Vice President Joe Biden says he now wants to throw out the Hyde Amendment, dropping his long-held support for the measure that blocks federal funds from being used for most abortions amid criticism from his 2020 Democratic rivals.

“If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone’s ZIP code,” he said.

The Hyde Amendment is a four-decade-old ban on federal dollars being used for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the woman’s life is in danger.

Biden’s campaign on Wednesday said he still supported the Hyde Amendment — a position that put him to the right of all other leading 2020 Democratic contenders, as well as Hillary Clinton and the party’s platform in 2016.

Biden told the crowd Thursday night he had changed his mind because Republican state lawmakers have enacted “extreme laws in clear violation of constitutional rights” protected by the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, making access to abortions more difficult for women who cannot afford the procedure or travel to obtain it.

He said he makes “no apologies” for his previous support for the Hyde Amendment.

“But circumstances have changed. I’ve been working through the final details of my health care plan like others in this race and I’ve been struggling with the problems that Hyde now presents,” Biden said.

It should be noted that If Elizabeth Warren and others had not taken such an aggressive stand against the Hyde Amendment that Biden would still support it.

Biden changed because he had to change in order to remain a viable candidate in 2020.

We have to decide if we want to have a leader who is purposefully moving the country forward or one who grudgingly embraces more progressive ideas when under pressure to do so.

Joe Biden’s evolution on abortion, explained

Joe Biden’s positions on abortion have evolved over time, and recently, they seem to be changing at an increasingly rapid rate. The latest shift happened on Thursday, when the presidential candidate announced that he no longer supports a ban on government funding for abortion.

The Biden campaign told NBC News earlier this week that the former vice president did support the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal funding for the procedure in most cases — a position that put him at odds with most of the 2020 Democratic field. But at a gala in Atlanta on Thursday night, Biden said that recent moves to restrict abortion at the state level had caused him to change his position.

“I can’t justify leaving millions of women without the health care they need,” he said, according to HuffPost. “If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support [the amendment].”

Sounds like a logical evolution of thought. When you know better you do better. Unless you’re a deplorable.

So, by your logic Obama went from anti-gay to pro because he had to. What happened to “people change”?

People don’t change in a day.

And I think that Obama was always fine with gay marriage but he knew that stating that publicly would have doomed his campaign.

On the other hand, Biden defended the Hyde Amendment for decades, until just yesterday.

Right. Let’s go after the one guy that is kicking Dump’s ass because, rather than be like Dump who thinks he knows everything and can’t be swayed even by experts, he went with what is true and right.

Yeah. Its hard for people to change period. America is full of hardasses. We got trump cuz obama approved gays, and transgender. We almost hit nirvana but the red hats pulled us back to the dark ages.

Call me a cynic, but I expect there to be very little significant difference among the surviving Democrat presidential candidates by the time the election rolls around. No matter what they say they believe in during the campaign, their goal is to get elected first and worry about dealing with reality second.

As for Biden’s change of mind, he’s entitled. His reasoning makes sense to this old lady who cheered Roe v. Wade despite my strict religious upbringing, and that he did it in a day or a month or longer doesn’t matter to me. It’s one tiny step toward trying to to move away from abortion as murder and abortion as part of a woman’s right to health care.

I don’t think Biden has a chance, precisely because he has decades of opinions from which opponents can draw examples of ‘but he used to say’ to discredit Biden 2020.
