In response to recent mass shootings Walmart will stop selling some kinds of ammunition and not allow open carry in their stores.

You know it’s bad when even Walmart is compelled to do the right thing.

Courtesy of CNN:

Walmart on Tuesday announced it will reduce its gun and ammunition sales, one month after more than 20 people were killed in a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Walmart also pressured Congress to enact gun safety measures.

The company, America’s largest retailer, said it will stop selling handgun ammunition and ammunition commonly used in assault-style weapons after selling all of its current inventory. Walmart (WMT) will also stop selling handguns in Alaska, the only state where it still sells handguns. And Walmart will request that customers no longer openly carry guns into its 4,700 US stores, or its Sam’s Club stores, in states that allow open carry.

“It’s clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo to employees on Tuesday.
However, Walmart will continue to sell long barrel deer rifles and shotguns and much of the ammunition for those guns. Walmart will also continue to allow concealed carry by customers with permits in its stores.

McMillon said Walmart’s changes were prompted by the El Paso, Texas, shooting, as well as recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and Midland and Odessa, Texas.

This is by no means a perfect response but I am going to resist being critical because at least it is something.

It would be great if Walmart stopped selling all ammunition and rifles altogether but sometimes things happen in baby steps, and this is an important one.

And you know it’s a big deal because the NRA is losing their shit over it.

That right there is enough to convince me that Walmart has done a good thing.

I mean I’m still not shopping there, but at least I will stop flipping off their stores as I drive by.

“What if there was a mass shooting in the United States not once or twice or four or six times monthly, but every single day, a big one, the kind that electrifies social media and squats for days on Page 1 — would that be enough to move Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from his insistent inertia on gun safety?”

Oh boy, there goes their customer base, although when the China tariffs kick in, their customers won’t be able to afford shopping there anyway.
