The stakes were high when Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren met at Warren’s apartment in Washington, DC, one evening in December 2018. The longtime friends knew that they could soon be running against each other for president.
The two agreed that if they ultimately faced each other as presidential candidates, they should remain civil and avoid attacking one another, so as not to hurt the progressive movement. They also discussed how to best take on President Donald Trump, and Warren laid out two main reasons she believed she would be a strong candidate: She could make a robust argument about the economy and earn broad support from female voters.
Sanders responded that he did not believe a woman could win.
Now when this story first came out it was reportedly from unnamed sources, and Sanders vehemntly denied that it has happend, so I put it aside because I did not want to participate in the spreading of false information that might harm the eventual Democratic candidate.
However since then Warren herself and confirmed the story and that makes it legitimately newsworthy.
Neither one of these people is known to spread deliberate falsehoods which makes figuring out who is being truthful particularly challenging.
I will say however that it certainly reinforces the narrative that Bernie is not especially supportive of women, which was a theme that popped up in 2016, and which was reinforced when female staffers claimed that they were mistreated within his campaign and paid less than male staffers.
Of course there is a debate tonight so we may get the opportunity to hear both candidates speak on his topic for themselves.
