Here is some fact checking of Trump’s Lies of the Union speech last night.

Nancy Pelosi said that it would take days to fact check this speech, and she is likely right about that.

However, a couple of news outlets already took a stab at it this morning.

I would like to say that the beginning of Trump’s speech seemed to be relatively innocuous and even seemed to flirt with the idea of increased bipartisanship.

But then it took a hard turn into Right Wing fantasy land and it never really re-emerged.

Here are a couple of the whoppers Trump told last night.

Trump said, “Year after year, countless Americans are murdered by criminal illegal aliens.”

CNN fact-checked that:

The Bureau of Justice does not include citizenship in its breakdown of national arrest statistics, so there is not reliable federal data to quantify the number of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.

Here’s what the statistics do show on immigration and crime. A 2018 study by the libertarian Cato Institute, which reviewed criminal conviction data from the Texas Department of Public Safety, found that immigrants — legal or illegally — are less likely than native-born Americans to be convicted of a crime. Throughout the country, there is also generally a decrease in the number of violent crimes, according to the FBI.

Other studies have found that murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault have not increased alongside an uptick in undocumented immigration since 1990, that undocumented immigrants do not contribute to an increase in drug overdoses and DUI deaths, and that young, undocumented immigrants engage in less crime than their American or legal immigrant peers.

Trump said, “One in three women is sexually assaulted on the long journey north.”

The Washington Post fact-checked that:

The White House attributes the 1-in-3 estimate to a 2017 report by Doctors Without Borders. But there’s less to that number than meets the eye.

Trump states as a fact that 1 out of 3 women traveling through Mexico are sexually assaulted. But the report did not conduct a random-sample survey that could be applied to all migrant women. Instead, the group interviewed nearly 500 people whom its doctors treated, of which 12 percent were women. So the statistic is derived from the experiences of 56 women and cannot necessarily be considered representative of all migrant women.

In the interviews, 31.4 percent of women said they were “sexually abused” on the journey, not “sexually assaulted” as Trump says. Considering only rape and other forms of direct sexual violence, 10.7 percent of the women who were interviewed said they were affected during their journey.

Trump did not revisit his fantasy of women with duct taped mouths being smuggled across the border, but he did suggest that thousands of women are brought over and then sold into prostitution, which is an extreme exaggeration, to say the least.

Trump said, “The lawless state of our southern border is a threat to the safety, security and financial well-being of all Americans. We have a moral duty to create an immigration system that protects the lives and jobs of our citizens.”

WaPo corrected that as well:

By any available measure, there is no new security crisis at the border.

Apprehensions of people trying to cross the southern border peaked most recently at 1.6 million in 2000 and have been in decline since, falling to just under 400,000 in fiscal 2018. The decline is partly because of technology upgrades; tougher penalties in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks; a decline in migration rates from Mexico; and a sharp increase in the number of Border Patrol officers.

The fiscal 2018 number was up from just over 300,000 apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border for fiscal 2017, the lowest level in more than 45 years.

In other words, there is no crisis.

Trump said, “If I had not been elected President of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea.”

That is of course obviously bullshit, but this is what CNN said in response:

The diplomatic thaw did not begin with Trump. It began in early 2018 when South Korean President Moon Jae-in welcomed North Korean athletes to the winter Olympics in PyeongChang in February. In April, Moon and Kim Jong Un held the first inter-Korean summit in more than a decade at the Korean demilitarized zone.

Before that, Trump’s rhetoric had arguably raised tensions. His August 2017 threat to meet North Korea “with fire, fury and, frankly, power the likes of which the world has never seen before,” prompted Pyongyang, the next day, to threaten to strike the US territory of Guam with an “enveloping fire.”

Trump did break precedent by hastily agreeing to an historic summit in Singapore with Kim. The June 2018 talks led to a vaguely worded commitment to “complete denuclearization.”

In other words, Trump increased the warlike rhetoric between the North Koreans and the US, and then gave Kim Jong Un the gift of traveling to his country for the first-ever summit between the leaders of both countries, and then magically believes he solved a problem that really did not exist.

And yes they are still working on their nuclear arms program.

Trump said, “Unemployment has reached the lowest rate in half a century. African American, Hispanic American and Asian American unemployment have all reached their lowest levels ever recorded.”

WaPo responded with this:

This is all in the past. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday that the unemployment rate had increased to 4 percent in January. The unemployment rate in December had no longer been at a 49-year low, but an 18-year low. Now it was merely the best since the beginning of 2018.

The African American unemployment statistic has been in existence for less than 50 years. It reached a low of 5.9 percent in May 2018, but had risen to 6.8 percent in January. The Hispanic American unemployment statistic has been in existence for less than 50 years. It reached a low of 4.4 percent in 2018, but had risen to 4.9 percent in January. The Asian American statistic has been around for less than 20 years. And while it reached a low of 2.1 percent in May 2018, it rose to 3.2 percent rate in January.

In other words, Trump is trying to take credit for President Obama’s hard work even though it is now starting to unravel under his leadership.

Trump also called for a ban on late-term abortions, I will let an actual doctor set that record straight.

Of course, Trump is pandering to his base here and could not care less about the health and safety of the mother, or the child’s quality of life.

There were other misstatements, exaggerations, and outright lies in the speech, but these were the ones that stuck in my craw the most.

This was really nothing more than one of Trump’s typical rally speeches, only it was given in more dignified surroundings.

He did nothing to improve bipartisanship and really went out of this way to start new fights that will only slow down cooperation between the two parties, even more, moving forward.

He definately read off that teleprompter. But when they stage him to do that he sounds so monotone. Do you really think he takes a calming drug? I read a book called 666 and in it the writer said hitler was under the influence of the devil and sometimes he was observed to go into a trance. In that book it said hitler was untouchable. Donald seems to be following that evil pattern.

      This/thaT Book?
“This is the person who is considered as the evilest personality of the 20th Century AD. Yes, this book is about Adolf Hitler. Check anyone’s listing of top ten cruel people in whole history, I bet you will find him anywhere around the mid of the list, sometimes as the crown holder too. But wait a minute, is that exaggerated. Our history is molded underneath the wishes of those who created it. Anyhow, for Germany, he is the person who picked her hand and took her out of the great depression and savages of the days following the end of First World War, and the person who lifted her up as one of the strongest nation in the globe during buffer between the first two World Wars. A person without any charismatic quality can’t perform this act. Off course Hitler owned many superior traits which acted as the ingredient for making of the ‘Fuhrer’ and let him showcase a great leadership throughout his ascendance. In this ‘Ultimate Collection’ Series, Book No.006, ‘666 Adolf Hitler Quotes’, the number 666 is denoted with a negative touch considering his historic image of the holocaust and toughness. There are six hundred and sixty six quotes of Hitler in this book for you to read on. The number 666 itself is mentioned as ‘Number of the Beast’. And with much surprise it was accidently taken as the 6th book of the ‘Ultimate Collection’ Series without pre-planning, just a coincidence, only discovered after the book was complied and was for publishing. As you would had noted by now, without much inspiration and motivation inside, Adolf Hitler won’t be able to accomplish the epic task of rebuilding Germany to much higher levels than anyone imagined. His words reflect it, and this is now for you to pick out the positive aspects and concepts from his insight and vision. When you go through this book, remember, you are wandering through the unlaced thoughts a bizarre human marvel of the modern age.””

      He hates sharks.
“The strangest thing about that night — this was the best thing ever,” she said. “You could see the television from the little dining room table and he was watching Shark Week and he was watching a special about the U.S.S. something and it sank and it was like the worst shark attack in history.

“He is obsessed with sharks. Terrified of sharks. He was like, ‘I donate to all these charities and I would never donate to any charity that helps sharks. I hope all the sharks die.’ He was like riveted. He was like obsessed. It’s so strange, I know.”

Trump’s fear of sharks doesn’t quite square with the fact that in January 2015, two years before becoming president, he reportedly had signed on to play the president of the United States in “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!”

Producers’ first choice for the role was Sarah Palin, but those negotiations fell through, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

So “Sharknado” star Ian Ziering, who had participated on “Celebrity Apprentice” with Trump, suggested the TV star.

“The Donald said yes,” producer David Latt told the Reporter. “He was thrilled to be asked.”

But the role never came to pass.

“One in three women is sexually assaulted on the long journey north.”
He forgot to mention 100% of the children are kidnapped and put in cages by the trump administration, never to be reunited with their parents because it is ‘too traumatic”.

  6. Anonymous February 6, 2019 at 12:18 pm

What is the deal with his latest rant to build a ‘human wall”… are trump supporters going to volunteer to make a human chain along the border?

Guess he can hire all those supporters that lost their jobs like the coal miners, farmers, Carrier and other factory workers.. because none of his “deals” were true.

Trump’s SOTU speech failed to discuss (1) his recent disastrous government shutdown or (2) the constant mass shootings in this country, mostly by white males, born in the USA.

Trump gets to choose what he wants to talk about, but it’s up to us and the press to expose his lies and hypocrisy. Thanks, Gryphen.

The Orange idiot also avoided his horrific policy of separating children from their parents (at the border) and the Trump Administration’s new excuse that it’ll be impossible to reunite these families.

I’ve come to appreciate Nicole Wallace as a journalist and MSNBC host. I also understand that she worked for the election of John McCain in 2008 but she is, in 2018-2019, one of the few media personalities who is willing to address the gigantic crazy elephant in the room: Don the Con. Apparently today he ranted about John McCain’s vote to save the ACA just weeks before he died. Don the Con saw the vote as a betrayal and then went on to say that McCain’s book did not do well. Wallace asked her guests if most family members would tolerate such behavior in their senior citizen parents without wanting them to get serious medical attention for them. I agree with her and wish that more members of the media would stand up to what this humanoid pestilence is doing to our country. Wallace’s guests kept making excuses: Don the Con always acts like that; he’s a bully; he’ll never change. Their excuses imply that we’ve just got to put up with him. Wallace’s question and mine is “why do we have to keep quiet about it?” It really is time for the media and the GOP to step up and put the country before their allegiance to an insane occupier of the White House and his Russian keepers. He is getting worse by the nanosecond.

I know this is OT and totally snarky, but I just can’t help myself. The pic of the Tangerine looking at Madam Speaker is a classic. How delusional must he be to think he still has a full head of hair? The back of his head is one step away from billiard ball status. Luv it.

I hadn’t noticed the back of his head in the photo but you’re absolutely right. I guess extreme vanity goes with narcissism.
