Ah, the party of family values strikes again.

A former Republican state senator in Oklahoma was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison Monday on a child sex trafficking charge.

U.S. District Judge Timothy DeGiusti handed down the sentence to Ralph Shortey, 36, who faced sentences of between 10 years and life in prison. DeGiusti also ordered Shortey to serve 10 years of supervised probation once he is released from prison and said he will impose a fine on the former two-term lawmaker at a later date. The fine could be up to $250,000.

Shortey pleaded guilty in November in exchange for prosecutors dropping three child pornography charges against him. He said at the time that the plea deal was in the best interest of him and his family.

Shortey was arrested in March 2017 after police found him in a suburban Oklahoma City motel room with a then-17-year-old boy. Police were acting on a tip from the teen’s father when they went to the motel and said they smelled marijuana coming from the room. Police accused the married father of four of hiring the teen for sex.

Shortey resigned shortly after the arrest. His wife obtained a divorce earlier this year.

Is it just me or does it seem like an inordinate number of current or former GOP politicians are eventually convicted of some kind of deviant sexual behavior?

I mean if I were a cynical person, and of course I’m not, it would almost seem as if they are drawn to the Republican party because they believe it provides a blanket of respectability and shields them from the kind of scrutiny which might reveal their illegal and immoral activities.

You know, kind of like the Catholic Church provides for pedophiles.

Somehow I don’t think this punishment is enough in part because the perpetrator is a politician. Fifteen years in prison, a fine and supervised probation period of ten years – not enough.

OT? “Robicheaux, 38, and Cerissa Laura Riley, 31, are charged with rape by use of drugs, oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance, assault with intent to commit sexual offense, and possession of a controlled substance for sale. Robicheaux is also accused of firearms violations.”

“Attorneys Philip Cohen and Scott Borthwick issued a joint statement on behalf of Riley and Robicheaux denying the allegations of nonconsensual sex.
“They have been aware of these accusations for a number of months, and each of them will formally deny the truth of these allegations at their first opportunity in court,” the attorneys said.
“Dr. Robicheaux and Ms. Riley believe that such allegations do a disservice to, and dangerously undermine, the true victims of sexual assault, and they are eager to have the proper spotlight shed on this case in a public trial.””

“do I believe she is dangerous? Yes, but not just to me. I believe that she is a danger and a threat to any vulnerable person in our community.””

Minnesota state rep campaigning for re-election had to withdraw from the ballot when it came out he’s been sexually abusing his own daughter. The family denies it of course. Say she’s crazy and estranged. This is not the first time she has tried to bring him to justice but this time it may finally be taken seriously.
