Isn’t this how people in Florida say hello?

A Florida man will not face charges after authorities said he accidentally shot and killed his son-in-law who had just flown to the U.S. from Norway as a birthday surprise.

The tragic case of mistaken identity occurred around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Gulf Breeze, said Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson at a Thursday press conference.

Johnson said that Richard Dennis, 61, of Gulf Breeze shot and killed 37-year-old Christopher Bergan, who was married to Dennis’ daughter. Bergan had flown from Norway to Florida to surprise his father-in-law for his birthday, the sheriff said.

So the story is that this man had been in an argument with another family member earlier in the evening, and so when he heard his son-in-law he came to the door with his gun.

The son-in-law then jumped out of a bush to surprise him and Richard Dennis shot him once in the heart killing him.

On the one hand it is never a good idea to jump out of the bushes to surprise anybody living in Florida, because you are definitely going to get shot.

However on the other hand this man thought his other relative was at the door and brought a gun with him to greet them, which really makes it seem that he had decided that somebody in his family was going to die that day.

Of course the Florida police are not going to press charges because…well it’s Florida.

Which is still a place that I have no interest in ever visiting again.
