Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, admonished Americans who have abandoned practicing personal mitigation measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus — asserting that such an “all or none” approach has contributed to a surge of new Covid-19 cases across the country.

“What has happened, I guess understandably, but nonetheless regrettably, [is] that people took the attitude in some places of either all or none. Either you’re locked down, or you just let it fly and you just ignore many of the guidelines of” social distancing, mask-wearing, abstaining from shaking hands and avoiding large crowds, Fauci told CNN in an interview that aired Monday.

“What happened is you see pictures on the TV of the fact that even in states that are telling their citizens to do it correctly, they’re doing that,” he continued. “There are crowds. They are not physical distancing, and they’re not wearing masks. That’s a recipe for disaster. It’s something I spoke about time and again.”

Today during a Senate hearing Dr. Fauci made his point even more explicitly.

Coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci issued a stark warning on Tuesday to lawmakers on Capitol Hill, telling them he wouldn’t be surprised if the US sees new cases of coronavirus rising to a level of 100,000 a day.

“We are now having 40-plus thousand new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around and so I am very concerned,” Fauci told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee during a hearing on the pandemic on Tuesday.

Fauci expressed dismay over people congregating in crowds and not wearing masks and inadequate attention being paid to guidelines on reopening.

“We’re going to continue to be in a lot of trouble, and there’s going to be a lot of hurt if that does not stop,” he said.

The simple fact is that giving people the freedom to use their common sense to keep themselves safe is a mistake.

While the majority of us will recognize the importance of wearing masks and social distancing there are a lot of knuckle-dragging mouth breathers who simply will not make the right choices and will continue to put the rest of us at risk.

I think the only real choice available is to make defiance of social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines a federal crime and deal with scofflaws the way the police deal with a black man who jaywalks.

In other words, slam them to the ground, cuff them with your knee on their back, and then taze them repeatedly until they promise to follow the guidelines.

That may seem harsh, but some of these rednecks and Trump supporters are impossible to reason with.
