Donald Trump wants US troops on the border to fire at rock throwing migrants.

That, of course, is illegal.

Continuing his drumbeat messaging campaign on immigration just days before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump, in remarks at the White House Thursday, announced what he described would be a change to rules to crack down on asylum seekers, suggesting without providing evidence that many migrants seek and receive asylum illegitimately.

Trump said the White House is finalizing plans to require migrants to “present themselves lawfully at a point of entry,” and that he would sign a “comprehensive” executive order “sometime next week.”

Under current law, immigrants may apply for asylum regardless of how they enter the country. Trump’s said his order would require them to apply at a port of entry.

For the first time, Trump also seemed to threaten the use of force against migrants at the border.

“They’re throwing rocks viciously and violently,” he claimed, referring to an encounter between the migrants and Mexican police. “They want to throw rocks at our military, our military is going to fight back.”

Asked if the military troops being sent to the border might fire on migrants, Trump responded, “I hope not.” But he quickly added, “Anybody throwing rocks … we will consider that a firearm.”

Asked about rock throwing again, Trump responded, “We’re not going to put up with that. If they want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back. We’re going to consider — and I told them, consider it a rifle. When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico military and police, I say, consider it a rifle.”

The troops are going to the border in a support role only and likely will never even come into contact with any immigrants.

But if they did the military rules of engagement forbid them from using deadly force against rock throwers.

Just like when Trump encouraged police officers to rough up suspects, what Trump is suggesting here is for the American military to break the law and in this case to murder civilians.

By the way where are these rock throwing migrants supposedly standing while they lob projectiles?

Is Trump literally suggesting that American troops fire on people standing on Mexican soil?

Because I’m pretty sure that could be seen as an act of war.

Is this really who we have become?

Former Obama-era Secretary of Defense and Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel:

“Hagel lambasted Trump’s decision “taking thousands of American troops who are trained on the cutting edge all the time, and sending them down to a border where there is no need, no threat to an invasion of the hordes coming in from Latin America, which is a joke.”
Hagel also cited the restrictions on military personnel at the border.
“They are of limited utility anyway because of the constitutional issues involved here as to what our active military can and cannot do,”
“Federal law FORBIDS “direct participation by a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps in a search, seizure, arrest or other similar activity unless participation in such activity by such member is otherwise authorized by law.”
“To use them as political pawns like this for a complete fabrication is really wrong.”
Tapper also asked Hagel his thoughts on Trump’s message to troops headed to the border that if migrants throw ROCKS at them,
to “CONsider it a RIFLE.” Hagel said he felt “DISGUST.”
“That’s a wanton incitement of unnecessary violence,” “It’s a distraction, it’s a distortion, it is of rank political purpose to use our military like this.” “Not in my lifetime have I ever heard those kinds of words from a president of the United States,” “

I have a very bad feeling that this is going to turn into a blood bath. Who ever heard of a president of the USA telling the military to SHOOT civilians?

I heard on CBC news that they walk about 17 kilometers/day, so it will take them at least another 10 days to reach the border, the election will be over and maybe they can tell trump to go to hell and not send the troops because his propaganda didn’t work.

I also thought that shooting people on Mexican soil is considered an act of war and the border isn’t well defined in some places.

17 kilometers = 10 miles. They are about 900 miles away from our southern border. That means they MIGHT arrive in about THREE MONTHS!!!

Meanwhile, we are wasting taxpayers’ $$$ on bored-to-death highly trained military people that will not be able to do anything anyway if/when the convoy finally arrives.

Why do you keep putting trump’s bad behavior on the rest of us.

The majority isn’t even behind trump and i have a feeling that the only ones approving of him are his hard core supporters that will never change.

Like it or not Trump is the face of America right now.

The fact that we cannot remove him from office, or even really slow down his destructive tendencies sends a message to the world that we are on board with his policies.

If that is not who we want to be we need to send as many Democrats as possible to Washington to slow his roll, and put his ass in a corner until the 2020 election.

If we fail to do that then suck it up buttercup, because to the world this is Trump nation whether you are wearing a red MAGA hat or not.

make America great again and shoot those with real bullets who throw rocks. I think there is something seriously wrong with that picture.

The contrast between Trump’s talk tough of troops at the border versus the reality of what they can actually do at the border is simply a reminder that the whole mobilization is a political stunt designed to capitalize on nativist anxieties.

Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, the head of US Northern Command, told reporters on Monday that the military will send:

Three helicopter companies, with night-vision capabilities, to help Border Patrol officers to reach remote locations quickly

Four airplanes to transport Border Patrol agents as needed

Deployable medical units to care for anyone that may needed attention

22 miles of concertina wire to reinforce fencing along the border

While the troops will be armed and will provide some security, it’s only to support Border Patrol agents in case they need it — military personnel won’t be independently patrolling the border and arresting migrants.
