So here we go folks, the number of candidates allowed to participate has been whittled down to ten so the debate will be on one night only this month.

The participants tonight include:

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Senator Elizabeth Warren

Senator Bernie Sanders

Senator Kamala Harris

Mayor Pete Buttigieg

Andrew Yang

Senator Cory Booker

Former Representative Beto O’Rourke

Senator Amy Klobuchar

And former housing secretary Julián Castro.

The most recent ABC/Washington Post poll shows Trump trailing the top five contenders.

Courtesy of ABC News:

Five Democratic contenders lead Donald Trump in head-to-head matchups in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, with several widening their advantage since July. Concerns about the economy, which have pushed down the president’s job approval rating, are a factor.

Among those tested in the survey, Joe Biden leads Trump by 16 percentage points among all adults, 54-38%, essentially the same as two months ago. Bernie Sanders leads by 12 points, up from 6 in July; as does Elizabeth Warren by 11 points, compared with a slight 7 points previously. Kamala Harris leads by 10 points, while Pete Buttigieg has a slight 6-point edge.

Trump’s support is virtually the same, 38%-41%, in all these matchups, vs. 41%-45% in July. What changes have occurred mainly reflect dips in his support rather than Democratic gains in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates.

I would look for some of those not in the top five to start making some noise by attacking Trump aggressively or questioning the qualifications of some of the front runners.

Of the front runners I imagine Biden will tout his record working with President Obama, Elizabeth Warren will talk policy, Bernie Sanders will remind everybody that all of the current ultra-progressive ideas were his first, Kamala Harris will talk about her record as a prosecutor, and that Pete Buttigieg will just be super glad to be up there.

As usual I will update this post as new information becomes available.

So choose your snacks and the beverage of your choice, and let’s sit back and watch democracy in action.

Update: Kamala Harris comes out of the gate strong.

Oh that is going to be played over and over again on the cable news channels tomorrow.

Update 2: Beto O’Rourke takes the ball and runs with it.

I have no faith that he could do what he says he wants to do, but I admire his passion.

Update 3: Julian Castro takes his shot at Joe Biden.

Hey, it worked for Kamala Harris. Temporarily.

Update 4: Elizabeth Warren believes gun control legislation needs to be pried out of the cold dead hand of the filibuster.

She’s right.

Update 5: I actually missed the most controversial thing that happened tonight.

That ad does not even make any damn sense!
