Oh, and they are going after their families as well.

Courtesy of NYT:

A loose network of conservative operatives allied with the White House is pursuing what they say will be an aggressive operation to discredit news organizations deemed hostile to President Trump by publicizing damaging information about journalists.

It is the latest step in a long-running effort by Mr. Trump and his allies to undercut the influence of legitimate news reporting. Four people familiar with the operation described how it works, asserting that it has compiled dossiers of potentially embarrassing social media posts and other public statements by hundreds of people who work at some of the country’s most prominent news organizations.

The group has already released information about journalists at CNN, The Washington Post and The New York Times — three outlets that have aggressively investigated Mr. Trump — in response to reporting or commentary that the White House’s allies consider unfair to Mr. Trump and his team or harmful to his re-election prospects.

Operatives have closely examined more than a decade’s worth of public posts and statements by journalists, the people familiar with the operation said. Only a fraction of what the network claims to have uncovered has been made public, the people said, with more to be disclosed as the 2020 election heats up. The research is said to extend to members of journalists’ families who are active in politics, as well as liberal activists and other political opponents of the president.

Attacking the messenger to undermine the message is nothing new, but going after their families seems especially egregious.

It also sounds more than a little desperate.

This may be the ugliest election season in history.

The FEC Enforces Campaign Finance Laws, And It’s Effectively Shutting Down

The Republican vice-chair of the Federal Election Commission has resigned, which means that there aren’t enough commissioners for the FEC to operate and enforce campaign finance laws as we head into the 2020 election.

After the resignation of Republican vice-chairman Matthew S. Petersen 0n Monday, the FEC doesn’t have enough commissioners to hold a quorum and conduct business. The commission is supposed to have six members, three Republicans and three Democrats, but there are currently only three.

Part of the problem is Trump, who broke with tradition by only nominating a Republican commissioner. Normally, presidents have nominated a Republican and a Democrat. Trump tried to rig the FEC. The Senate won’t give his nominee a hearing, and now, the country is stuck with a commission that can’t actually enforce penalties for campaign finance violations.

This means that while the FEC will still be able to shine a light on the funding of our elections, they will not be able to be back up to full speed until probably after the 2020 election. At a time when the country needs stronger campaign finance laws, Trump has set up a situation where candidates could theoretically cheat all they want with little or no consequence potentially for years down the road for their violations of the law…..

Trump is ‘a bottomless pit of emotional need’ with a ‘desperate’ desire for friends: NYT’s Charles Blow

……“For Donald Trump, all is personal,” wrote Blow. “And in his view, he is not the executive of the company. He is the embodiment of the country. He runs the country the way he ran his business, as the curating and promotion of his personal brand.”

He noted that to Trump, voters are like customers, and policies are nothing more than marketing ploys.

“For Trump, everything is image-based and rooted in the appearance of personal relationships. When the Danish prime minister rebuffed his overture about buying Greenland, calling the idea ‘absurd,’ Trump threw a tantrum and canceled his visit to Denmark,” Blow recalled of the week’s news.

…..“Everyone around Trump knows his weakness: He is a bottomless pit of emotional need, someone who desperately wants friends but doesn’t have the emotional quotient to know how to make and keep them. So, they flatter him and inflate him,” Blow wrote.

Anyone willing to pretend to be Trump’s friend can manipulate him and the White House along with it. Blow explained it’s a bad deal for the U.S. which should never be owned or for sale.

Why listening to Donald Trump causes severe mental whiplash

      • Sochi 2014 August 26, 2019 at 3:51 pm

Trump was performing his America-first, free verse, free-association best version of himself with baffled global allies, who must have sat there wondering in what universe this guy thinks he exists. At one point, Trump announced that he has always found American wines much better than French wines, the subject of tariffs between the countries, possibly putting 100% tariffs on French wine in return for French fees on American technology company sales. Trump, of course, famously does not drink wine. Trump said the other leaders liked his notion to re-admit Russia back into the G-7 (or then G-8), despite the fact that Russia grabbed the CRIMEa from Ukraine. They all remained adamant against the idea.

Christian law firm that represented Kim Davis begs for cash after court rules gay couples can sue her

    • DOG GONE August 26, 2019 at 4:02 pm

“In an email fired off this Friday, the Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver wrote that Davis “risked everything she had rather than violate her conscience. She refused to endorse what God prohibits by issuing marriage licenses with her signature to same-sex couples.” – “Staver declared that his law firm, which has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, will continue to defend Davis because “her future is in real jeopardy” as a result of the court’s ruling.” – ” “It’s a matter of time before such a case goes squarely before the Supreme Court.””
