The British royal family has made a dramatic intervention over the impact of climate change, warning the Earth is at a “tipping point” and urging the world to lift its game over the next decade.

Launching “the most prestigious environmental prize in history”, Prince William on Tuesday said humans faced a “stark choice”.

“Either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve,” he said.

“Remember the awe-inspiring civilisations that we have built, the life-saving technology we have created, the fact that we have put a man on the moon.

“People can achieve great things. And the next 10 years presents us with one of our greatest tests – a decade of change to repair the Earth.”

While Prince William and his father, Prince Charles, have long campaigned on environmental awareness, the blunt language used to reveal the first details of the so-called Earthshot Prize is rare for such senior members of the royal family.

People often say that celebrity activism does not change minds, but of course that is not true.

And how much truer must it be when the British royal family takes up a cause like this?

I really think that we are going to see some substantial and productive changes coming to our approach to climate change in the next few years.
