Body armor wearing shooter kills multiple people in Dayton, Ohio.

They are coming to so hard and fast now that you cannot recover from the last one before it is time to talk about the next one.

Courtesy of the AP:

A gunman wearing body armor and carrying extra magazines opened fire in a popular nightlife area of Dayton, Ohio, killing nine and injuring dozens, authorities say, in the second U.S. mass shooting in less than 24 hours.

Dayton police patrolling the area responded in less than a minute to the shooting, which unfolded around 1 a.m. Sunday on the streets of the Oregon District, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said at a press conference.

Whaley said if the police had not responded so quickly, “hundreds of people in the Oregon District could be dead today.”

The gunman, who has not been identified by authorities, was shot to death by responding officers. Whaley said he was carrying a .223-caliber rifle and had additional high-capacity magazines with him. Police believe there was only one shooter, and have not yet identified the suspect or a motive.

At least 26 others are being treated at area hospitals, though no details about their conditions have been released.

A .223-caliber rifle is essentially and AR-15 like weapon.

Witnesses described the scene as a war zone.

This is still an unfolding story so we are learning details as they emerge.

I will update this post as more information become available.

Update: Here is video from the parking lot. (Caution some NSFW language here.)

Yeah, that sounds very much like a war zone.

Update 2: The names of the victims.

Just like in my El Paso post I will not share the name of the shooter.

However the names of those who are killed deserve to be remembered.

I keep thinking about President Obama’s public statements when there was a mass shooting. Then I think of Trump on Twitter. I think of other Presidents and then Trump on Twitter. The next time someone is praising Trump I may bluntly tell them that the economy does not justify the terrorisim in this country he has orchestrated encouraging and fueling white nationalism.

Ohio and Texas Republican senators Rob Portman (Ohio), J. Cornyn and Ted Cruz (Texas) all have an “A” rating from the NRA and take thousands in NRA money. They will offer “thoughts and prayers” for gun victims and nothing more.

Ohio allows high capacity magazines of up to 30 rounds. States that limit high capacity magazines have less than half the rate of mass shootings than states without limits.

Demographics show why Republicans are pulling out all stops to retain power: It’s their last chance

…This is the very dangerous last gasp of conservative nationalism. It cannot exist, after this, not without scrapping our democratic processes.

Every action Sen. Mitch McConnell and the party’s other top leaders take is in service to staving off that day for as long as possible. The most conservative possible judges are being installed, and non-conservative judges blocked, so that new voter initiatives and newly emerging public norms can be tossed by fiat, as necessary, for however many decades each new human sandbag can hold out.

If that means embracing the most rotten possible of allies, forgiving the most loathsome of behaviors, and outright ignoring a dozen different crimes, it is all being stomached in order to whittle down as much of democracy as can be whittled down before the Republican racist coalition gets put into overly ornate urns and lost among their children’s belongings.

For Mitch McConnell and the rest of the old guard, the ones who believe the confederate flag to be “heritage” and who snapped a million different neurons at the election of a man named Barack, this is it. It is now or never. Trump could be exposed as selling nuclear warheads to ISIS for 50 dollars and a Mar-a-Lago membership each, and it would be put up with—for the sake of everything else.

Um. What about that same closeness to the tens of Billions that “Christians” have murdered and tortured and slaughtered in the name their savior? Or the other tens of billions of children that have been raped by the clergy?

Sounds like the pope and Jesus are the real murderers.

#MoscowMitch is blocking a gun reform bill in the Senate. A bill that has passed the House. A bill that “would make it more difficult for would-be mass shooters to obtain weapons designed to mass kill human beings”.

  12. Paul August 4, 2019 at 6:51 am

Ohio and Texas are both concealed carry states. Undoubtedly many people in the Walmart in Texas were armed, and probably some in Ohio where the killings happened . And yet, apparently not a single person drew their gun to fight off the shooters. Don’t the supporters of concealed carry say, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun?” Well, what happened to these “good guys?” Or maybe the people who say this are full of shit.

    • anonymous August 4, 2019 at 8:08 am

It’s one thing to be able to shoot a gun at a target. It’s another thing to be able to shoot a gun at another human. Especially when that human has a much bigger gun and doesn’t give a schitt who s/he kills. I think it is fair to assume that many of the CC types, in a crisis situation, even if they managed to unholster their weapon, wouldn’t be able to hit the broad side of a barn. They’d be too busy schitting themselves.

    • Beaglemom August 4, 2019 at 1:33 pm

A quick question. How does one “conceal” an AK-47-type weapon when entering a shopping center or even a Walmart?

      • Whatevs August 4, 2019 at 9:50 pm

Ohio is an open carry state.

Russia going broke? Have to be Lord of War in selling AK-47 globally?

    • Whatevs August 4, 2019 at 9:47 pm

In Ohio, the shooter was killed within a minute of opening fire by police. They heavily patrol this tourist and nightlife spot, especially as closing time approached. But that is how much carnage an AK 47 can do in that short amount of time. No one besides trained officers had time to pull a weapon – everyone else was scrambling for cover. If anyone else had pulled a gun, they’d be dead because the cops wouldn’t have had time to figure out if it was a good guy or a bad guy – ya know?

I’ve wondered how much of the money distributed to Don the Con and the rest of the GOP in 2016 came from Russia. It’s clear that Russia was using the NRA to launder its contributions to the GOP. Who in the party leadership knew in advance of the money-laundering plan?

  16. Anonymously August 4, 2019 at 7:04 am

Can we stop saying this is shocking? It’s not shocking. We have a gun epidemic in America and a President who uses racist rhetoric to stir violence.

This weekend is the result of both problems.

    Oh shut the fuck up!

Patrick said on Fox and Friends, “We’ve always had guns. We’ve always had evil, but what’s changed when I see this rash of shootings? And I see a video game industry that teaches young people to kill…I look at social media. The violence of just bullying young people on social media every day we turn our head and we allow it. I look at Sunday morning when half of your viewers are getting ready to go to church, and yet tomorrow, we won’t even let our kids pray in our schools…It’s many factors that go into these shootings. Many factors, and it’s not a time to politicize. It’s a time to look deep inside of who we are as a country, where we no longer salute our flag.”

The Republican Party is dying because old white men like Dan Patrick point the finger at social media bullying while ignoring the fact that the biggest social media bully in the country is Donald Trump. Patrick floated the absurd idea that more prayer in school, not less access to assault weapons, is the answer to decreasing mass shootings. There is a problem with adequate access to mental health care in this country, but the bigger issues are the Republican refusal to do anything to make it more difficult for potential mass killers to easily buy guns.

    • Anonymous August 4, 2019 at 9:30 am

From a practicing and imperfect Christian:

Some of the biggest hypocrites I’ve seen are in churches.
You can pray anywhere, even (gasp) at your own desk!
When I deem it worthy, I’ll salute the flag, and, until then, shove it.

    • Anonymous August 4, 2019 at 12:36 pm

They played “it is the video games” story years ago, it didn’t fly then and it won’t now.

What is the difference between then and now.. we have a dictator in the WH spreading hatred 24/7.

His name was Connor Betts. Six of those that died were black. Bett’s sister was one of the three others that died.

I can’t help but speculate that Connor had issues with who his sister associated with.
