We have already heard Trump’s version of why his meeting with the Taliban did not work out. He blamed it on the death of an American soldier though there was apparently no agreed-upon cease-fire leading up to this meeting.
However that is not the story the Taliban is telling.
Courtesy of NYT:
Even as President Trump blamed a recent Taliban attack for his decision to call off nearly yearlong negotiations with the insurgents, officials suggested on Sunday it had more to do with the Taliban’s resistance to the American terms for a peace deal, and a rushed plan for a Camp David summit meeting.
Talks that once seemed on the verge of a breakthrough had hit a wall over how the deal should be finalized and announced, they said.
At Camp David, the traditional retreat of many presidents, separate meetings with each side would then lead to a grand announcement by Mr. Trump, according to Afghan, Western and Taliban officials with knowledge of the peace talks. The Americans were also rushing to finalize outstanding issues, including disagreements over prisoner release, before the meeting on Sunday.
The Taliban leaders, however, having refused to negotiate directly with the Afghan government until after the group had an agreement with the United States, had compared the proposal to the Americans’ tricking them into political suicide.
“We promised there would be intra-Afghan talks once we finalized our agreement with the Americans,” a senior Taliban leader said. “If Trump and his administration think they would solve the confrontation between the government and the Taliban somewhere in Washington in a meeting, that’s not possible because we do not recognize the stooge government.”
On Sunday, after their negotiating team held an emergency internal meeting in Doha, the Taliban said Trump’s decision to cancel the talks would only have consequences for the United States. The group said in a statement said it received an invitation in late August to visit the United States, but had put off a decision until the deal was finalized.
“More than anyone else, the loss will be for the United States — their standing will be hurt, their anti-peace position will be clearer to the world, their human and treasure loss will increase, and their political actions will come across as unstable,” the group said. “Twenty years ago, too, we had called for understanding, and this remains our position today. ”
For his part the Afghan leader also remained skeptical but felt he had nothing really to lose as there were no other options on the table.
All in all it seems as if these “peace talks” were a hastily thrown together publicity stunt with no help of success.
As for Trump’s bizarre excuse that the talks were called off due to a single American military death it should be noted that according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo we have killed significantly more of them than that.
Courtesy of the AP:
Pompeo acknowledged that the attack was not the first during the period in which peace talks have been held. He also said the U.S. has been attacking the Taliban throughout this period.
Pompeo said more than 1,000 Taliban have been killed in battle over the past 10 days alone.
Wait, we have killed a thousand Taliban in just ten days?
That is a hundred every single day for ten days straight.
Does that ring true to anybody?
And let’s say that it is true, that would mean that the Taliban were suffering a huge number of casualties daily and still willing to talk peace and that the US lost a single soldier and walked away from the deal entirely.
That sounds insane.
I hate to say it but in a choice of who to believe between Donald Trump and his Administration and the leaders of the Taliban, I am going to have to side with the Taliban.
Yeah I know that sounds fucked up, but that is where I am now thanks to the avalanche of lies which have poured out of the Trump White House since the inauguration.
By the way if you thought that the only thing this story lacked was a connection to Russia, have no fear we have that as well.
#Russia‘s state media:
Draft peace agreement between the Taliban and the Trump admin said that U.S. forces will leave five bases in Afghanistan within 135 days of signing the document, the U.S. & the Taliban insist that Russia be present at the possible signing of the agreements. pic.twitter.com/YjZBjacYLz

So was a representative from Russia also invited to this pow wow at Camp David?
And if that was the case, why in the fuck was that the case?
