As you might expect the Taliban has a different version as to why peace talks at Camp David did not move forward.

We have already heard Trump’s version of why his meeting with the Taliban did not work out. He blamed it on the death of an American soldier though there was apparently no agreed-upon cease-fire leading up to this meeting.

However that is not the story the Taliban is telling.

Courtesy of NYT:

Even as President Trump blamed a recent Taliban attack for his decision to call off nearly yearlong negotiations with the insurgents, officials suggested on Sunday it had more to do with the Taliban’s resistance to the American terms for a peace deal, and a rushed plan for a Camp David summit meeting.

Talks that once seemed on the verge of a breakthrough had hit a wall over how the deal should be finalized and announced, they said.

At Camp David, the traditional retreat of many presidents, separate meetings with each side would then lead to a grand announcement by Mr. Trump, according to Afghan, Western and Taliban officials with knowledge of the peace talks. The Americans were also rushing to finalize outstanding issues, including disagreements over prisoner release, before the meeting on Sunday.

The Taliban leaders, however, having refused to negotiate directly with the Afghan government until after the group had an agreement with the United States, had compared the proposal to the Americans’ tricking them into political suicide.

“We promised there would be intra-Afghan talks once we finalized our agreement with the Americans,” a senior Taliban leader said. “If Trump and his administration think they would solve the confrontation between the government and the Taliban somewhere in Washington in a meeting, that’s not possible because we do not recognize the stooge government.”

On Sunday, after their negotiating team held an emergency internal meeting in Doha, the Taliban said Trump’s decision to cancel the talks would only have consequences for the United States. The group said in a statement said it received an invitation in late August to visit the United States, but had put off a decision until the deal was finalized.

“More than anyone else, the loss will be for the United States — their standing will be hurt, their anti-peace position will be clearer to the world, their human and treasure loss will increase, and their political actions will come across as unstable,” the group said. “Twenty years ago, too, we had called for understanding, and this remains our position today. ”

For his part the Afghan leader also remained skeptical but felt he had nothing really to lose as there were no other options on the table.

All in all it seems as if these “peace talks” were a hastily thrown together publicity stunt with no help of success.

As for Trump’s bizarre excuse that the talks were called off due to a single American military death it should be noted that according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo we have killed significantly more of them than that.

Courtesy of the AP:

Pompeo acknowledged that the attack was not the first during the period in which peace talks have been held. He also said the U.S. has been attacking the Taliban throughout this period.

Pompeo said more than 1,000 Taliban have been killed in battle over the past 10 days alone.

Wait, we have killed a thousand Taliban in just ten days?

That is a hundred every single day for ten days straight.

Does that ring true to anybody?

And let’s say that it is true, that would mean that the Taliban were suffering a huge number of casualties daily and still willing to talk peace and that the US lost a single soldier and walked away from the deal entirely.

That sounds insane.

I hate to say it but in a choice of who to believe between Donald Trump and his Administration and the leaders of the Taliban, I am going to have to side with the Taliban.

Yeah I know that sounds fucked up, but that is where I am now thanks to the avalanche of lies which have poured out of the Trump White House since the inauguration.

By the way if you thought that the only thing this story lacked was a connection to Russia, have no fear we have that as well.

So was a representative from Russia also invited to this pow wow at Camp David?

And if that was the case, why in the fuck was that the case?

Taliban Says Trump’s Decision to End Talks Has ‘Damaged U.S. the Most’

“Now that the U.S. President Trump has called off the negotiations with the Islamic emirate, this has damaged U.S. the most, has affected its reputation, has further disclosed its anti-peace stance, and increased financial losses and loss in lives and affected America’s activities when it comes to political interaction,” the Taliban said in a statement.

Trump Wanted to Boast About His Own ‘Camp David Accords’ Before Taliban Deal Collapsed

….But the dynamics were obvious to Afghans on all sides, even if most Americans were not paying much attention: Trump is torn between his desire to get all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan so he can declare an end to what has come to seem an endless war, and his desire to appear a winner in the conflict.

The Taliban Are Laughing at Trump’s Afghan Peace Talks Bluff

….But the longer the talks go on, the clearer it is that the Taliban have the final say. They know Trump is desperate to leave, and they are determined not only to remain a power in their country, but to re-establish what they call the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

….“We’re going down to 8,600 and then we make a determination from there as to what happens,” Trump told Fox News Radio last week. Obviously aware how unsatisfying such arrangements are for supporters who want a definitive end to America’s longest war, Trump also repeated his thought that the U.S. could win that war “so fast, if I wanted to kill 10 million people … which I don’t.”

Such hollow threats only play into the hands of Taliban propagandists who already benefit from what they portray as U.S. disregard for civilian casualties and U.S. Special Envoy Khalilzad’s overstated optimism in an interview published Monday by Afghanistan’s TOLONews agency could be read as a reaction to Trump’s overstated rhetoric of fire and fury.

In the meantime, in what is also a familiar pattern during peace negotiations, the Taliban have stepped up the pace of the war in the field to strengthen their hand at the table.

‘By delivering a mostly pre-cooked Afghan accord at Camp David, Trump could have signed the agreement with his now-famous Sharpie and claimed it was bigger, better, the best, the most beautiful … we all know how that goes.

But the Taliban just wouldn’t let him get away with the kind of language and spectacle he wanted. They kept insisting on a complete and explicit timeline for the “evacuation,” as they put it, of all U.S. personnel. The American withdrawal supposedly would be conditional on their actions, but they knew that as U.S. support for the Afghan government waned, the insurgents could expect government troops and security forces to quit fighting them or, indeed, join them. The fiction of peace with honor could fall apart badly a year from now at the height of the U.S. presidential campaign.’

Hard to make that look like a win for Trump.

CNN Analyst Samantha Vinograd Hits Trump For Revealing Secret Taliban Meeting: ‘There’s a Reason They’re Kept Secret’

….“I never thought I would agree with Liz Cheney, but when she said the Taliban should never set foot on Camp David, she’s right. He’s right to talk to the Taliban and Kim Jong-Un if they are credible, but he doesn’t need to overdo it and invite the terrorists to Camp David,” Vinograd said.

Experts caution North Korea is testing ‘creative’ weapons that threaten U.S. — but Trump could care less

President Donald Trump gushed at love letters sent to him from North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Trump had claimed that the country was ready and eager to sign a denuclearization treaty, but the event was canceled at the last minute when Trump failed at the negotiation.

Months later, North Korea is now “testing” more weapons, some of which could reach U.S. land and certainly could hit U.S. allies like Japan or South Korea. It’s something that Americans should be more concerned about, at least one expert told CNN.

you may not recall but the russians were fighting in Afghanistan for decades and lost, that might have something to do with it. Maybe the Taliban wanted all the losers at the table.

too bad John McCain isn’t around, when we were backing the Taliban against the russians, he had many “friends” among them.

National weather staff ‘worried they won’t be able to do their jobs’ after Trump demands report change: Former NOAA chief

The Trump administration has censored scientific findings that run in conflict with its political ideology since taking office. Medina noted that anything weather-related has gone unscathed in large part because it’s hard to lie about the weather, but also because it’s illegal to do so.

…..“The first is that this was unprecedented. In modern times we haven’t had a president or political apparatus around the weather forecasters actually lean in and try to get them to change a forecast, much less have a president change it after the fact,” said Medina. But that’s exactly what Trump did. “So, that was really remarkably bad, and disturbing to me as a former person in that agency who worked hard to keep the integrity of the science intact. Secondly, I think the agency itself is now in a tailspin. There are a lot of people there very concerned about this kind of pressure and worried about it happening again. And everyday forecasts are pretty routine and run of the mill, but in an emergency, that’s when you have to have complete confidence and what the weather forecast office did in Birmingham was completely normal and what they should have done, which was to correct the forecast so that the right information was going out to people and they either didn’t over-prepare or underprepare for a storm.”

….She then explained that those scientists at NOAA and the NWS are now working scared. At a time when Trump is controlling the government, is it now possible that national disaster truthers will emerge to claim tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and fires never happened or were “false flags” by the “deep state?”

“They are worried. They are feeling the pressure,” Medina explained. “I started Our Daily Planet because we were hearing these stories from the government from other agencies. Up until now, NOAA had been relatively unscathed and hadn’t felt pressures to change the science or feel like their job was at risk if they did what they were supposed to do, what the statutes, the law tells them to do. And now I think they’re worried they won’t be able to do their jobs effectively. Which is why one of my successors said he couldn’t imagine how leaders would stand up in front of the agency and look them in the eye after having told them not to take on the president.”

“The United States successfully extracted one of its highest-level spies from inside the Russian government in a mission completed in 2017, Trump administration officials are reported to have told CNN. One of CNN’s sources reportedly claimed that the removal of the spy was partially driven by concerns that President Trump and his administration could potentially expose the spy. It’s reported that the decision to carry out the mission came shortly after Trump discussed classified intelligence with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a meeting in the White House. That episode reportedly prompted intelligence officials to renew discussions about the risk of their source being exposed. The CIA denied CNN’s version of events, and White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said: “CNN’s reporting is not only incorrect, it has the potential to put lives in danger.””<the Daily Beast
