AOC calls out the media for misquoting her. Again.

Now as you heard Stephen Colbert set this up by asking AOC “On a scale from zero to some, how many f—s do you give?” to which she responded “zero.”

However various news outlets posted headlines that were some version of “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she has zero f**ks to give about pushback from Democrats.

Including this article from The Hill:

“Now, congresswoman, for you and other freshmen members of Congress, you’re getting a fair amount of pushback from even members of your own party saying ‘wait your turn, go slow, don’t ask for so much so fast right now, you’re new, wait your turn for everything and don’t make waves,'” late-night host Stephen Colbert said to the rising progressive star on CBS’s “The Late Show.”

“I want to ask this question in a respectful manner, knowing also that you’re from Queens, so you will understand this question,” he continued.

“And the BX,” Ocasio-Cortez, who is also from the Bronx, laughingly injected.

“On a scale from zero to some, how many f—s do you give?”

After taking a moment to deliberate, Ocasio-Cortez reached into her side and pulled out her hand to make a circle, saying: “I think it’s zero.”

“That’s my thought!” Colbert exclaimed.

As you might imagine the Right Wing media had a field day with this quote.

Having her statements dissected and then misrepresented is nothing new for AOC, who has started addressing these mischaracterizations on social media.

And she did this time as well:

Now as somebody who covers politics and the news and I am a little guilty of this myself.

You hear an attention-getting quote and you want to post it.

In this case, AOC did not actually say the full quote but her response indicates that it is what she meant, so I think a lot of journalists would call it fair game.

Now a veteran journalist might decide to mansplain this to Ocasio-Cortez and tell her that this is the way things work in political journalism and that she needs to grow a thicker skin.

But does she?

If AOC is ready and willing to respond to each and every one of these to keep the record straight, she may actually be able to protect her brand for years to come.

Remember Hillary’s stoic attitude toward libelous news coverage had people convinced that she was a lesbian, that she was cold and difficult to work for, and that she actually had people killed to protect herself and her family from unflattering stories.

So who’s to say that ACO may not have the right approach here?

Certainly not me.

    @AOC
It’s wild that some people are more scared of a marginal tax rate than the fact that 40% of Americans struggle to pay for at least one basic need, like food or rent.

Imagine if we focused positively, away from fear of the former toward solving the latter.
