Another Republican is poised to quit in response to Donald Trump’s presidency.

I’m surprised there has not been a mass exodus.

A fifth Republican congressman appears set to quit the party in the space of two weeks amid ongoing tension over Donald Trump’s presidency.

Representative Mike Conaway will not seek re-election to his Texas seat in 2020, the Politico website reported. He has not confirmed his decision or reason for retiring but he is set to make a statement to the media.

The move has prompted worries within the party that others will follow suit and step down, because of the difficulties that come with serving under Mr Trump and working with a Democratic majority in Congress.

“Serving in the era of Trump has few rewards,” Tom Davis, a former senior Republican congressman, told The Hill website. “He has made an already hostile political environment worse.

“Every day there is some indefensible tweet or comment to defend or explain. It is exhausting and often embarrassing.”

Jesus, there’s the understatement of the year.

Trump is perhaps the most toxic president in this country’s history.

And that is not just coming from Democrats either.

The daughter of notorious racist George Wallace also agrees.

As President Donald Trump continues to invoke race as a major talking point ahead of the 2020 election, the daughter of an infamous segregationist politician from decades ago sees parallels between her father, former Alabama Governor George Wallace, and Trump.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Peggy Wallace Kennedy said. “I saw daddy a lot in 2016.”

She suggested that Trump, a president who has consistently created controversy — both on and off the campaign trail, as well as before he was elected president — with racially-charged remarks, is perhaps not only racist, but that he is more so than Wallace, a politician who once promised “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”

“Unfortunately, it does look like the ’60s now,” Wallace Kennedy said. “Each of us, individually, need to act with compassion and pray for our democracy. I hope we don’t go back. But it looks like where we are slipping… that seems to be where the top is taking us.”

A new study has even more depressing news about the times we are living in today.

Violent right-wing hate crimes are on the rise during Trump’s presidency, a new report released on Monday revealed.

“Report to the Nation: 2019 Factbook on Hate & Extremism” was released by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.

“Hate crimes in thirty of America’s largest cities rose nine percent in 2018 to a decade high of 2,009,” the study revealed. The data shows hate crimes increasing from 1,730 incidents in 2016.

The increase has happened while overall crime in America has declined.

“White nationalism/far right extremism continue to be most ascendant” brand of hate crime, the study noted. The study’s authors noted that the “overwhelming majority” of ideological murders in 2018 “were by white nationalist/far right sole assailants who attacked around the mid-term elections.”

The study found that homicides motivated by white supremacy have gone up by 466%, from three killings in 2016 to 13 in 2017, and 17 in 2018.

“The most common victims for hate crime reported to police in major cities in 2018 were African Americans, Jews, and Gays,” the study noted. “Jews were the direct target of half of the bias/extremist homicides in 2018, in the worst year ever for anti-Semitic killings in the United States.”

Donald Trump gave white supremacists permission to openly hate and vilify anybody that they want.

And clearly they have responded exactly as you might have predicted.

Remember if you are still defending Trump you are defending racism, xenophobia, and misogyny.

What a bunch of cowards, why don’t they stand up to the bully ? instead of running for the hills.

They helped create the problem and enabled trump and as usual are going to leave it to the Democrats to clean up their mess.

Yes, they are a bunch of cowards. Even if they expected to lose their re-elections because of it, they could stand up and speak against this traitorous, greedy pig in the White House. Anon, at 3:39, I agree with you 100%.

Naw. She’s busy with her wild children and their failures, due to her negligence, when it really counted. I think she realizes now it was not worth it. Should have said no.

Update: Twitter Erupts as GOP’s Lone Black Rep, Trump Critic Will Hurd, Announces Departure: ‘An Absolute Earthquake’

Hurd is the seventh Republican to announce he or she will be stepping down after this term in Congress end. He joins two other Texas Republicans and two of the 13 women who are House Republicans as well as a member of the GOP House leadership. But the departure of Hurd, a moderate who was the lone Republican to win in a district that went for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and who is also the party’s lone African-American House member, was quickly seen as a bellwether of Republican pessimism for retaking the House majority in 2020.

GOP congressman Will Hurd of Texas – the only African-American Republican in the House of Representatives – announced on Thursday that he will not be seeking reelection in 2020.
Rep. Hurd made it clear that Trump’s recent racist attacks on minority congresswomen and inner cities were indefensible:

“‘The convention logo reflects both the energy of this vibrant city and traditions of the Republican Party. We look forward to working with the wonderful people of the Queen City to host a historic convention that will propel President Trump to a second term,’ said RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel in a statement.”

And he’s got a big red truck! Doesn’t surprise me. He probably bought the truck to match his MAGA hat. Once “deplorable” always deplorable.

The last remaining black Republican Representative in the House is opting not to run for re-election. Another from Texas. Another opportunity to turn Texas blue.
