Things just got real here in Anchortown.

An emergency order issued Monday morning by Mayor Ethan Berkowitz prohibiting dine-in service for food or drink at restaurants, bars and breweries goes into effect at 5 p.m. Monday through March 31. It also includes entertainment facilities such as theaters, gyms and bingo halls. Buffets and salad bars will also be closed to self-service.
“By making sacrifices now, we reduce the likelihood that we will pay a larger cost later,” Berkowitz said in a statement. “These closures are consistent with CDC recommendations and with our strategy of doing what we can to reduce the possibility of transmitting COVID-19. As a friend told me, ‘It will be impossible to know if we overreacted or did too much, but it will be quite apparent if we underreacted or did too little.’ ”
The mayor’s order also bans all events and gatherings of more than 50 people.
I was literally talking on the phone with my mom about the restaurant and bar closings in New York and New Jersey when this news hit.
I am both impressed and surprised that we responded so quickly.
However we have Ethan Berkowitz, a Democrat, as our mayor so perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised.
We still have only one reported case of the Coronavirus up here but I have heard several reports of sick people being turned down for testing, so we really don’t know how bad it might be.
If this is happening right now way up here in Anchorage you can be certain that it will be happening everywhere in the next couple of days.
