“Earlier today, the United States’ Ambassador to Estonia, Jim Melville, announced his intent to retire from the Foreign Service effective July 29 after 33 years of public service,” a State Department spokesperson confirmed.

Foreign Policy reports that the early retirement is related to Trump’s controversial comments about U.S. allies in Europe.

Melville wrote in a private Facebook post obtained by Foreign Policy that he decided it was time for him to leave after Trump’s comments on how the EU was “set up to take advantage of the United States, to attack our piggy bank“ and that “NATO is as bad as NAFTA.”

Melville is the third ambassador in the past year to retire early.

I do believe that Trump has lost more cabinet members and administration staff than any other president in history.

Which considering that he is a fucking lunatic is not at all surprising.

What is surprising is that there is anybody left who is willing to work for him.

Anyone who will pledge their loyalty to Trump and who is willing to kiss his pudgy, sagging ass can easily find work in this administration. There are millions of such people out there and competence for a particular position is simply not necessary. An interesting historical antecedent: Heinrich Himmler was a chicken farmer before he became the head of the SS in Nazi Germany.

Interestingly Himmler’s daughter Gudrun died this past week at the age of 88. She remained a “loyal Nazi” to the end. Simply weird.

Melville had a long and distinguished diplomatic career. He is precisely the kind of diplomat this country desperately needs right now – someone with experience and someone who understands the history behind our traditional and honorable alliances with European countries. I certainly understand his decision to retire; it just saddens me that the US Diplomatic Corps has become so discouraged and decimated because we now have an ignorant president who thinks he knows it all when, in fact, he knows nothing.
