Alabama essentially makes all abortions illegal.

And here it is.

Courtesy of NYT:

The Alabama Senate approved a measure on Tuesday that would outlaw almost all abortions in the state, setting up a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, the case that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to end a pregnancy.

The legislation bans abortions at every stage of pregnancy and criminalizes the procedure for doctors, who could be charged with felonies and face up to 99 years in prison. It includes an exception for cases when the mother’s life is at serious risk, but not for cases of rape or incest — a subject of fierce debate among lawmakers in recent days.

The House approved the measure — the most far-reaching effort in the nation this year to curb abortion rights — last month. It now moves to the desk of Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican. Although the governor has not publicly committed to signing the legislation, many Republican lawmakers expect her support.

In an email on Tuesday night, a spokeswoman for the governor, Lori Davis Jhons, said Ms. Ivey would “withhold comment until she has had a chance to thoroughly review the final version of the bill that passed.”

There is virtually no chance that this Republican governor is not going to sign this bill, which means that this will go to the courts with the hope that the Supreme Court has been stacked with enough Right Wing jurists to allow it to stand.

This is the conservative wet dream that they have been fighting to achieve for the last fifty years.

Once again this has NOTHING to do with protecting the unborn, and EVERYTHING to do with controlling women and keeping them in their place.

I believe in a woman’s right to choose, to choose what is best for herself and/or her family.

Roe v. Wade has been law for over 40 years, yet we still have a bunch of white men making laws that suppress women. I personally oppose this legislation or anyone trying to overturn the current law. I’d like to hear the opinion of the women voters of Alabama. Where do the Alabama voters stand on this issue?

The government has run amok by these white Republican hypocrites. They legislate against a women’s right to choose on the false narrative of when life begins. Yet, these are the same lawmakers that refuse to legislate for gun control. They also support the death penalty. And they support policies that cut social programs while children in this country go to bed hungry every night.

And the irony is they all consider themselves good Christians. Phooey!

Men’s right’s first, fetus’s second, and the incubator, excuse me, woman’s rights last.

So if this somehow manages to stay lawful, will they be punishing the man who impregnated the woman, along with the doctor and woman? Doubt it.

I am appalled by the silence of the medical community about this terrifying turn of events. Doctors know that there are pregnancies that should not advance because of dangers to the mother and to the fetus. They know that a miscarriage is “an act of nature” that should be respected. They know that ectopic pregnancies never end well. They know that young girls, if they survive a full-term pregnancy, sometimes cannot have children once they are grown because of the damage done to their immature bodies. All across the country, doctors should be demonstrating against these heinous laws. But there is nothing from them.

Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies.

They’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women.

From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.

On social media, hundreds of ordinary Americans answered a call by talk show host Busy Philipps to share stories and “end the shame”.
Philipps launched the hashtag #youknowme aimed at showing how common it is for women to end their pregnancies.

“1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Many people think they don’t know someone who has, but #youknowme

Time for women to pack their bags and leave Alabama.
