A reminder that the fault for gun violence in America falls right at the feet of the Republicans and Donald Trump

That’s right President Clinton actually did something to protect us from assault weapons.

The last time the federal government managed to pass laws that limit the spread and use of guns in the United States was 25 years ago. It was 1994. Bill Clinton was president and the original Lion King had just been released in theaters.

That law was known as the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, and it was temporary. Written into the legislation was an expiration date of 10 years. But for that decade, the law essentially banned the manufacture, sale, and possession of some military-style assault weapons, including the AR-15. A recent study found that the ban reduced the number of mass shootings during the decade it existed.

After the ban expired in 2004, there were several attempts to bring it back. US president Barack Obama tried to renew the ban in 2013 after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, where a gunman used an AR-15 to massacre 26 people, including 20 kids between the ages of 6 and 7. But the Senate again stood in the way, voting not to renew.

In this press conference yesterday Donald Trump suggested that there needed to be more of a focus on video games and mental health.

Well President Obama did pass legislation concerning mental health and access to guns.

This is courtesy of a Washington Post article from January 27, 2017:

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.

The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.

That was literally one of Trump’s first acts after he took office and now here he is acting as if he is going to do something substantive to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

In both of these cases Democratic Presidents signed legislation to protect Americans from gun violence, and in both cases the Republicans sabotaged those efforts.

So when you see Republicans on TV crying crocodile tears and lamenting the violent state the country is in, remember that they created this mess, and they are never going to do anything to clean it up.

For that you need Democrats, lots and lots of Democrats.

How satisfying it would be if the mayors of El Paso and Dayton would emphatically tell him to stay in DC because he is not wanted.
Just another photo op for him when he couldn’t give a shit about any of it.

I like that idea they refuse Trump to visit and a recommendation the cost of the POTUS traveling and cost of security be donated to victims funds.

And follow that money to ensure it reaches those funds and not his bank accounts.
        Rat bastard.

EL Mr. I don’t pay my bills, owes El Paso $500,000 for one of his rallies.

They should tell him NO MORE GOLF and donate the money to the victims, he has already surpassed what Obama spent in ALL travel including state visits in 8 years. little donnie has spent $110million of OUR MONEY to play golf.

I love it when Mulvaney was yakking guns have been around for hundreds of years and there were no mass shootings, what is different now. The reporter should have answered him back THE HATE SPREADER IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

It is really ironic that one of Mulvaney’s talking points was guns have been around for hundreds of years and there were no mass shooters, what is different now? The interviewer should have answered THE HATE SPREADER IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

Ohio rep Mike Turner (R) has come out in favor of a ban on military style weapons.

The Nebraska Republican Party has called on Sen John McCollister to leave the party because he accused his fellow Republicans of enabling white supremacy by staying silent on Trump’s hateful rhetoric.

El Paso congresswoman Veronica Escobar has refused to meet with Trump when he comes to El Paso because she refuses to be an accessory to his visit.

Fox news editor Chis Stirewell says that Trump exploits racial animus.
